JAKARTA – Vietnam’s herbal medicine industry is transforming, moving beyond small local cooperatives to integrate into international Halal value chains. With over 5,000 medicinal plant species—1,300 already in use—the country possesses a rich natural and cultural resource. Supported by national development programs, more than 600 herbal cooperatives are now building standardized cultivation zones and partnering with processors to create complete, sustainable supply chains.

A key focus is the global Halal market, which demands rigorous quality, safety, and traceability. Industry leaders highlight that obtaining Halal certification is a strategic “golden key” for Vietnamese herbal products, given their natural composition aligns well with Halal principles. Success hinges on building an integrated ecosystem: Halal-compliant raw material zones, certified processing facilities (GMP/Halal), reliable local certification bodies, and strong international distribution networks.

Provinces like Thai Nguyen exemplify this shift, where cooperatives have earned OCOP, VietGAP, and GACP-WHO certifications, listing products on e-commerce platforms. With state support in certification subsidies and export incentives, Vietnam’s herbal sector is poised to become a significant player in the global Halal economy.
