Asmeelya Ishak, a graduate research assistant at the university, took to Facebook to share her observations about the two vendors located in the library foyer. She pointed out the contradictory signage that indicated the stalls were non-Halal while also claiming to be Muslim-friendly. In her post, she stated,

“FYI, non-Halal is NOT Muslim friendly. Don’t put the signage side by side like this. Just put NOT FOR MUSLIMS. Easy.”

In response to the uproar, Din Shamsudin Hussin, a university alumnus, reported that the university authorities acted quickly to address the issue. On April 21, the Security Department took immediate action to shut down the non-Halal food stalls and clean the area. This swift response aimed to restore clarity and uphold the university’s policies regarding food safety and dietary restrictions.

A Call for Greater Sensitivity

Hussin emphasized the need for student organizations, such as the student council and the Tionghoa Language Association, to be more mindful of Halal and Haram issues. He urged them to better understand the university’s policies and to avoid misusing the flexibility granted to them. “All parties need to play their role in educating these ‘Gen Zs’ more effectively,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of awareness and education in navigating cultural sensitivities.
