Museum of Islamic Art Unveils Culinary Heritage Exhibition
The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) has launched a comprehensive exhibition exploring the culinary traditions and cultural significance of food within Islamic civilization. This exhibition, titled “A Seat at the Table: Food & Feasting in the Islamic World,” will remain open for public viewing through November 8, 2025.
International Collaboration Brings Historical Artifacts Together
The exhibition represents a collaborative effort between MIA and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), combining expertise and resources to create a meaningful cultural experience. This partnership demonstrates the global nature of Islamic culinary heritage and its continued relevance in contemporary museum practices.
The showcase draws artifacts from multiple prestigious institutions, including the Qatar National Library, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Lusail Museum, and Qatar Museums’ General Collections. This diverse sourcing ensures visitors encounter a comprehensive representation of Islamic dining culture, from historical manuscripts to contemporary artistic interpretations.
Comprehensive Programming Schedule Enhances Visitor Experience
- Expert-Led Educational Tours
Specialized tours conducted by curators Teslim Sanni and Dr. Tara Desjardins are scheduled for August 12 and September 16, 2025, both running from noon to 1:00 PM. These English-language sessions provide detailed insights into the historical and cultural contexts of the displayed artifacts, offering visitors deeper understanding of Islamic dining traditions and their social significance.
- Innovative Interactive Experiences
The museum introduces “The Banquet of Secrets,” Qatar’s first museum-based escape room experience, operating on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from July through December 20, 2025. Participants navigate through chambers themed around different Islamic scholarly traditions—Traveller, Cook, Physician, and Calligrapher—working to discover lost culinary knowledge and ultimately earn an invitation to a fictional Sultan’s banquet.
Hands-On Learning Opportunities for All Ages
- Adult Creative Workshops
The “Pinch Pot for Adults” workshop, scheduled for August 3-5, 2025, allows participants to engage with traditional Islamic pottery techniques using coiling methods. This hands-on experience connects contemporary visitors with the tactile artistic traditions that produced many of the vessels and serving pieces featured in the exhibition.
- Youth Programming Initiatives
Children aged 7-10 can participate in the “Planet Kids Club: Discovering Herbs and Food Through Art” on October 28, 2025. This program combines gallery exploration with interactive activities, helping young visitors understand the connection between artistic representation and the sensory experiences of herbs and ingredients in Islamic culture.
The “We Are What We Eat” summer camp, also designed for children aged 7-10, runs from August 3-5, 2025, focusing on themes of food, personal identity, and environmental sustainability through creative workshops that promote cultural understanding.
Special Library Exhibitions and Literary Events
- Rare Manuscript Display
The MIA Library presents “Cures, Remedies, and Recipes: Treasures of MIA Library,” featuring previously unexhibited medical manuscripts from the MIA Gastronomy Collection. This display operates daily except Wednesdays from July through November 8, 2025, providing visitors with insights into historical approaches to medicine and healing through food.
- Scholarly Discussion Programming
A book discussion centered on “The Exile’s Cookbook: Medieval Gastronomic Treasures from Al-Andalus and North Africa” is scheduled for September 29, 2025. This event connects literary exploration with physical artifacts from the exhibition, followed by a guided tour that reinforces the connections between written and material culture.
Cultural Exchange and Educational Impact
This exhibition continues the cultural exchange initiatives established during the Qatar-USA 2021 Years of Culture, demonstrating ongoing commitment to international cultural dialogue and understanding. The program illustrates how culinary traditions serve as bridges between different cultures and historical periods.
The museum has designed programming to accommodate various age groups and interests, from scholarly pursuits to family-friendly activities. This inclusive approach ensures that the exhibition’s educational value reaches diverse community segments, fostering broader appreciation for Islamic cultural heritage.
Registration for all programs is available through the Qatar Museums website at qm.org.qa, with the institution encouraging advance booking to ensure participation in these specialized educational experiences.
