Learning from History: Surah Al-Baqarah’s (2:42) Message on Truth and Deception
In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 42, Allah says:
وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا الْحَقَّ وَاَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ
“Do not mix truth with falsehood or hide the truth knowingly.”
The tafsir published by Quran NU Online explains that Allah prohibits the Bani Israel from mixing truth with falsehood and concealing the truth, including the news of the coming of Prophet Muhammad.
Historical Context
Historically, the verse was revealed regarding some People of the Book who recognized signs of Prophet Muhammad’s prophethood in their scriptures. However, due to personal interests, social status, and fear of losing influence, they chose not to share this knowledge openly. Some classical interpretations mention that they even hid or changed parts of this information so people would not follow the Prophet (Syafiq, 2022).
For example, Aisarut Tafasir reports that some of the Bani Israel claimed that Prophet Muhammad was sent only to the Arabs, not to them. This shows how they acknowledged the truth of his prophethood but falsely limited its scope. The message of Prophet Muhammad was, in fact, meant for all humanity without exception.
This behavior illustrates how the truth can be formally accepted but distorted in practice. “Mixing truth with falsehood” does not always mean rejecting the truth outright—it can also mean presenting it in a misleading way or leaving out critical parts.
The verse also warns against concealing the truth (kitman al-haq). This does not only happen through open denial; staying silent while knowing the truth is also included. When someone withholds the truth due to personal gain, fear, or social pressure, they fall under the warning of this verse (Fajar, 2021).
Relevance in the Modern Era
Although this verse specifically addresses the Bani Israel, its message is universal and timeless.
In modern life, mixing truth and falsehood can be seen everywhere. In media, facts are often combined with opinions or presented in ways that make it hard to distinguish reality from interpretation. In academia, manipulating data or presenting incomplete findings is another form of modern deception. Academic dishonesty can also take the form of plagiarism—using other people’s ideas, words, or research without proper citation. Quoting information without acknowledging the original source hides the true origin of knowledge and creates a false impression of originality. (Munthe et al., 2024).
Similarly, in social and religious life, verses or hadiths are sometimes cited out of context to support personal or political agendas. The truth may be mentioned, but its full meaning is hidden.
Hiding the truth in today’s context can also appear as:
- Failing to disclose conflicts of interest
- Suppressing research outcomes that do not meet expectations
- Staying silent when witnessing injustice
These examples show that the moral challenges warned about in this verse are not just historical. They remain relevant today, reminding us to uphold honesty and integrity in all aspects of life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:42) teaches a timeless lesson about honesty and moral responsibility. The warning given to the Bani Israel is not limited to a specific community or period in history; it speaks to anyone who has knowledge of the truth. Whether in religious understanding, academic work, media, or everyday life, integrity requires that truth be conveyed clearly and completely. This verse reminds us that knowing the truth is not enough—we are also responsible for protecting it from distortion and concealment. Upholding truth with sincerity and courage remains an essential value in every era.
