In an exciting development for beverage enthusiasts, a Russian expatriate has launched a distinctive halal non-alcoholic ale in Dubai, inspired by an ancient drink from the Arabian Peninsula that has been enjoyed for thousands of years. The innovative product, named Majlis, is crafted by Midtown Factory using a proprietary brewing technique that ensures it remains completely alcohol-free while capturing the authentic taste and complexity of traditional brews.
Igor Sergunin, the mastermind behind Majlis Premium Arabian Ale and CEO of Midtown Factory, shared the historical significance of the drink: “Our journey began with a desire to revive a beverage that has deep roots in the Arabian Peninsula. Thousands of years ago, people brewed a non-alcoholic drink believed to aid digestion, which travelers relied on for sustained energy during their journeys. The brewing process took two to three days.”
Majlis adheres to the same traditional brewing methods but incorporates controlled yeast to maintain its halal status. “We use the same ingredients—malt, water, yeast, and hops—which together produce essential vitamins like B1, B6, B15, C, and D. With our advanced technology, we ensure that all our products are halal,” Sergunin explained.
After undergoing rigorous testing, the company proudly received Halal certification from UAE authorities. “We have successfully passed the Halal certification process, confirming the integrity of our product,” Sergunin stated.
What sets Majlis apart from conventional brewing methods is its unique approach that keeps the beverage alcohol-free from the very beginning. “Crafted with care and adhering to halal guidelines, Majlis employs proprietary technology that guarantees the process remains alcohol-free throughout. This method preserves the essence of halal principles while delivering the authentic taste of a brewed beverage,” he added.
Sergunin’s motivation for creating Majlis stemmed from a desire to provide healthier options for his children. “While shopping for drinks, I noticed that many were heavily processed and unhealthy. I wanted to create beverages that would be beneficial for everyone,” he remarked, emphasizing their collaboration with nutritionists to perfect the recipe.
Notably, Majlis drinks contain no processed sugars, deriving their sweetness from natural sources. “The sugars in our drinks come from nature,” he noted.
Available in five unique varieties, Sergunin prefers not to label them as “flavors.” He explained the rationale behind reviving this ancient recipe: “These drinks originated in this region, and the UAE is the ideal place to introduce them to a global audience, given its diverse population.”
Positioned as a healthier alternative to traditional energy drinks, Majlis offers sustained energy without the crash. “Our drinks provide long-lasting energy,” Sergunin affirmed.
The brand name, Majlis, embodies the spirit of gathering rather than partying. “Majlis means ‘gathering.’ It’s about coming together and enjoying our halal-brewed beverages,” he concluded.
