In a strategic move to tap into the burgeoning global halal travel market, the Philippines is enhancing its tourism infrastructure to attract visitors from Muslim-majority nations, as reported by Arab News. While the country is predominantly Catholic, it boasts a rich Islamic heritage that spans over 600 years, evident in its diverse cultural landmarks and historical narratives.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) has launched several initiatives aimed at making the Philippines a more welcoming destination for Muslim travelers. One of the key programs is the Muslim-friendly accommodation initiative, which ensures that hotels and resorts adhere to specific standards, such as providing prayer rooms and serving halal-certified cuisine. Currently, 17 establishments have received official recognition as Muslim-friendly, with 13 of these operated by the Megaworld Group.
On the stunning island of Boracay, known for its pristine beaches, the Marhaba Boracay was inaugurated last year, creating a dedicated space for Muslim women travelers. Additionally, the DOT is collaborating with local tour operators to develop customized halal tourism packages that cater to the unique needs of Muslim visitors.
The Philippines’ Islamic heritage is prominently displayed in historical sites such as the Sheikh Karimul Makdum Mosque in Tawi-Tawi, the oldest mosque in the nation, established in 1380. Other significant locations related to the Sulu Sultanate, which played a pivotal role in the spread of Islam in the region, are also being highlighted to attract tourists.
To further enhance its appeal, the DOT is working diligently to improve air connectivity with Gulf countries, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Ongoing negotiations with airlines are expected to yield air service agreements in the near future, facilitating easier access for Muslim travelers.
These comprehensive efforts aim to position the Philippines as a premier destination for Muslim tourists, seamlessly blending its breathtaking natural beauty with cultural and religious inclusivity, making it an ideal choice for those seeking both adventure and spiritual fulfillment.
