South Korean pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are increasingly producing halal-certified medications to overcome domestic market limitations and actively expand into overseas markets. Halal certification, which previously focused mainly on health supplements like probiotics and collagen, has recently expanded to include botulinum toxin and various new drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Breakthrough in Botulinum Toxin<\/b><\/h2>\n

Chong Kun Dang Bio achieved a world-first milestone last month by obtaining halal certification for its botulinum toxin product ‘TYEMVERS’ in Indonesia. This certification allows Muslim consumers to use the product in accordance with Islamic law. For botulinum toxin to receive halal certification, manufacturers must use culture media that excludes animal-derived components, and bacterial strains must be sourced from halal-compliant environments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Expanding Product Portfolio<\/b><\/h2>\n

Daewoong Pharmaceutical is marketing ‘Epodion,’ an anemia treatment for chronic kidney disease and cancer patients, in Indonesia. The company established a joint venture called ‘Daewoong Infion’ with a local Indonesian firm to produce halal-certified products. A Daewoong representative explained that obtaining halal certification for biopharmaceuticals is extremely complex, requiring proof that no ‘haram’ (forbidden) ingredients are used, and demonstrating that DNA and cell lines were produced through halal processes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, Daewoong’s diabetic foot ulcer treatment ‘EasyEF External Solution’ has received halal certification in Indonesia and is being exported to the local market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Market Growth Projections<\/b><\/h2>\n

According to market research firm Precision Business Insights, the global halal pharmaceutical market is currently valued at approximately $100 billion (130 trillion won) and is projected to reach $250 billion (330 trillion won) by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategic Implications<\/b><\/h2>\n

This trend represents South Korean pharmaceutical companies’ strategic pivot toward the rapidly growing Muslim consumer market, which spans across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other regions. By obtaining halal certification, these companies are positioning themselves to capture significant market share in countries with large Muslim populations, while also differentiating their products in an increasingly competitive global pharmaceutical landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

The shift from basic health supplements to sophisticated medications like botulinum toxin and specialized treatments demonstrates the maturation of the halal pharmaceutical sector and its potential for substantial growth in the coming decade.<\/span><\/p>\n
