E-commerce Platforms Face Scrutiny Over Counterfeit Health Products

Consumer Protection Alarm Raised

The Muslim Consumers’ Association of Malaysia (PPIM) issued urgent warnings on September 18 regarding fraudulent health supplements circulating through online marketplaces bearing counterfeit halal certificates. This alarming development threatens consumer welfare, religious compliance standards, plus Malaysia’s digital commerce integrity.

PPIM’s Chief Activist Nadzim Johan demanded immediate regulatory intervention against companies perpetrating these deceptive practices. He emphasized that delayed action could seriously compromise public health while undermining Muslim confidence in syariah-compliant business operations throughout Malaysia.

Case Study: Counterfeit Omega-3 Scandal

The controversy emerged following Holista Colltech Limited’s police report concerning fake PRISTIN® Omega-3 fish oil products discovered on major platforms including Lazada plus Shopee. Laboratory analysis revealed these counterfeit items contained low-grade palm oil rather than authentic fish-derived Omega-3 compounds.

Holista, operating from Petaling Jaya headquarters, clarified that legitimate halal-certified products are exclusively distributed through Ministry of Health-licensed pharmacies plus their official digital channels: Alterni.com alongside Holista.global. This verification system ensures product authenticity while maintaining regulatory compliance.

Regulatory Response Demands

PPIM has formally requested investigations from the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) together with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). These agencies must identify platform operators plus hold responsible parties accountable for enabling fraudulent activities.

Nadzim outlined three critical concerns threatening Malaysia’s consumer protection framework: halal certification misuse erodes Muslim community trust, counterfeit supplements circumvent safety regulations while endangering public health, plus Malaysia’s e-commerce reputation faces potential damage without swift enforcement action.

Broader Implications for Digital Commerce

The activist expressed deep concern about counterfeit product proliferation within Malaysia’s rapidly expanding e-commerce ecosystem. He warned that numerous similar cases might exist undetected by regulatory authorities, creating systematic risks for unsuspecting consumers.

PPIM’s leadership has called for emergency consultations between pharmacy chains plus the Malaysian Dietary Supplement Association to address mounting consumer anxieties. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen verification systems while restoring public confidence in online health product purchases.

The situation highlights critical vulnerabilities in digital marketplace oversight, demanding immediate attention to protect both religious compliance standards plus consumer safety across Malaysia’s growing online retail sector.
