The agreement was unveiled during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to Malaysia, where he held high-level discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The move aims to deepen economic ties between the two Muslim-majority nations, particularly in agriculture, technology, and education. Both leaders committed to expanding cooperation beyond traditional sectors to include innovation, digital infrastructure, and high-tech industries.

Halal Meat Trade Framework Introduced

At a joint press conference, PM Anwar confirmed that Malaysia will begin importing beef and other halal meat products from Pakistan under a newly established framework. The imports, worth up to $200 million, will be subject to market-driven pricing and Malaysian halal certification standards.

Prime Minister Sharif assured that Pakistan would fully comply with Malaysia’s certification requirements and expressed hope for long-term expansion in halal exports.

“We will meet all your conditionalities to ensure this partnership grows stronger,” said Sharif.

Expanding Cooperation in Technology, Education and STEM

Beyond agriculture, both governments are now exploring joint initiatives in STEM fields, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and digital services. PM Anwar highlighted Pakistan’s early promise in these areas, and Sharif proposed joint ventures that combine Pakistani talent with Malaysian expertise, particularly in vocational training and digital innovation.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Malaysia-Pakistan Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (MPCEPA), which has enabled preferential trade since 2008.

Regional Diplomacy and Shared Strategic Interests

The discussions also addressed geopolitical and humanitarian issues, including support for a ceasefire in Gaza. Both PMs expressed backing for international efforts, particularly those led by the U.S., to de-escalate the conflict and ensure humanitarian access. Anwar also commended Pakistan’s stance on counterterrorism and its broader contributions to regional stability in South Asia.

Cultural Relations and Educational Engagement

Sharif emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy during his visit. He launched the Urdu translation of PM Anwar’s book “SCRIPT”, calling it a meaningful gesture to enhance mutual understanding between Pakistan and Malaysia. Sharif also noted Pakistan’s intention to learn from Malaysia’s advances in economic planning, skills development, and innovation ecosystems.

Trade Snapshot: Growing but Uneven

As of 2024, bilateral trade between the two nations stands at $1.4 billion annually. Pakistan exported roughly $515 million worth of goods to Malaysia, while Malaysian exports totaled nearly $960 million, largely driven by palm oil, machinery, rubber, and chemicals.

Pakistan’s key exports include rice, textiles, seafood, and minerals. However, both sides are now looking to diversify trade into areas like IT services, halal certification, and advanced manufacturing.

Looking Ahead: A Modernized Trade Framework

In October 2024, both countries signed four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, and industrial collaboration. They also agreed to renegotiate and modernize the MPCEPA, aiming to better reflect emerging opportunities in the digital economy, sustainability, and high-value sectors.

Original Article:

Amjad, F.
