JAKARTA<\/strong>\u00a0– The head of Gaza’s Fishermen’s Union, Nizar Ayyash, issued a stark warning on Sunday about the potential collapse of the maritime fishing sector, which serves as the primary income source for thousands of Palestinian families. The industry has suffered losses surpassing $75 million as a result of the ongoing Israeli military campaign.<\/p>\n

Widespread Infrastructure Destruction<\/h2>\n

Ayyash revealed that Israeli bombardment has caused comprehensive destruction to the infrastructure of Gaza’s seaports, including the main Gaza port and the northern sector port. Additionally, approximately 70% of port facilities in the central and southern regions have sustained significant damage.<\/p>\n

The devastation extends beyond ports to fishing boats, equipment, and storage facilities. Navigation and communication tools have been lost, making it extremely difficult for fishermen to resume operations or repair their remaining assets given the limited resources available.<\/p>\n

Severe Restrictions on Fishing Activities<\/h2>\n

Israeli authorities continue to impose strict limitations on fishing movement within Gaza’s territorial waters. Fishermen are only permitted to sail short distances using small boats, significantly reducing daily production capacity.<\/p>\n

Ayyash reported that Israeli occupation forces have arrested several fishermen while working at sea, despite posing no security threat. He described these measures as compounding the suffering of workers in this vital sector.<\/p>\n

Humanitarian and Economic Crisis<\/h2>\n

The union leader warned that continued port disruption and absence of compensation could exacerbate the economic and living conditions for thousands of families entirely dependent on fishing for their livelihood. This comes as the coastal sector already endures prolonged blockade, soaring unemployment rates, and widespread poverty.<\/p>\n

Ayyash emphasized that fishing represents one of the pillars of food security in Gaza and provides employment opportunities for a substantial portion of the population. He called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently to reconstruct fishing ports and compensate those affected.<\/p>\n

The fishing industry crisis adds to Gaza’s mounting economic catastrophe, with previous reports indicating that 15 vital sectors have suffered direct losses of $70 billion, while overall destruction has exceeded $86 billion after more than two years of conflict.<\/p>\n
