Indonesia leads as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, with around 248.6 million Muslims \u2014 well ahead of Pakistan in second place with 246.3 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

These figures are far more than demographic statistics. They represent a market signal that no one can afford to ignore. Muslims are active consumers, purchasing daily necessities ranging from food, clothing, and banking to travel and beauty \u2014 and every single purchasing decision is shaped by one core value: halalness.<\/span><\/p>\n

The global industry has taken notice. Across every sector, businesses are racing to align their products and services with the halal, clean, and hygienic standards that Islam requires. Among the most dynamic respondents is the cosmetics industry, a sector that has always been defined by its capacity for innovation and trend adaptation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The global halal cosmetics market is currently valued at approximately USD 53 billion in 2025 and is projected to soar to USD 163 billion by 2035 \u2014 growth fueled by an expanding Muslim middle class, heightened ingredient awareness, and surging demand for beauty that is both ethical and religiously compliant.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the heart of this market boom, one particular innovation has been generating considerable buzz: ablution-friendly cosmetics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Islamic jurisprudence (<\/span>fiqh<\/span><\/i>) sets a firm requirement that water must genuinely reach every part of the body that must be washed during ablution. This means that any cosmetic product that forms a water-resistant film on the skin could render one’s ablution \u2014 and therefore one’s prayer \u2014 invalid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here lies both the root of the problem and the business opportunity. Millions of Muslim women who wear makeup daily face a dilemma: either remove all of their makeup up to five times a day to perform valid ablution, or find a solution that allows both to coexist. This verse is the universally agreed-upon legal foundation for wudhu across all major Islamic schools of jurisprudence (madhhabs). “If wax, dough, henna, or similar substances are present on any of the ablution body parts and prevent water from reaching any portion of that part, then the purification is not valid \u2014 whether the barrier is large or small.”<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Imam Nawawi’s statement makes clear that no matter how small the barrier \u2014 even the size of a fingernail tip \u2014 it renders wudhu invalid if it prevents water from touching the skin. This is what makes cosmetics a critical halal checkpoint.<\/span><\/p>\n

      The ablution-friendly cosmetic trend is living proof that Islam is not opposed to beauty \u2014 and that the cosmetics industry can align with spiritual values. But one thing must be understood with absolute clarity:<\/span><\/p>\n

      Not everything labeled “wudhu-friendly” is truly safe to wear during ablution. And not everything that is halal-certified is automatically safe to wear during wudhu.<\/b><\/p>\n

      Both criteria must be met simultaneously. An ideal cosmetic product for a Muslim woman must satisfy two conditions at once: (1) halal in its ingredients \u2014 free from pork derivatives, khamr alcohol, and impure substances; and (2) measurably water permeable \u2014 proven through laboratory testing that water can reach the skin while the product is worn.<\/span><\/p>\n

      The jurisprudential principle established by Imam Nawawi more than seven centuries ago finds new relevance in the age of nano-technology and advanced cosmetic formulation. The principle itself has not changed: water must genuinely touch the skin. What has changed is the way we verify whether a given product meets that requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n

      As an informed Muslim consumer, the path forward is clear: seek products that carry official halal certification (a valid BPJPH or MUI Halal logo) and explicitly carry a laboratory-substantiated wudhu-friendly or water permeable claim. When in doubt, the very hadith that Imam Nawawi preserved in Al-Arbain already provides guidance: <\/span><\/p>\n

      “Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt.” (HR. Tirmidzi and Nasa’i)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
