Malta Officially Certifies Local Meat as Halal
A New Milestone for Malta’s Meat Industry
Malta has taken a significant step forward in its meat production capabilities by obtaining halal certification for beef, mutton, and goat meat. This announcement was made by the government on Tuesday, marking a new chapter for local farmers and the meat industry.
Official Halal Certification Granted
The World Islamic Society has officially certified Malta’s abattoir, allowing it to produce halal meat. This certification ensures that the meat is prepared according to Islamic law, which is crucial for Muslim consumers. Halal, meaning “permissible” in Arabic, involves specific slaughtering practices that include cutting the jugular vein, carotid artery, and windpipe of the animal.
Ensuring Quality and Compliance
The agriculture ministry emphasized that halal certification provides peace of mind for Muslim consumers purchasing local lamb, goat, and beef products. It guarantees that these products are not only permissible for consumption but also prepared with a focus on humane treatment and cleanliness.
However, it’s important to note that not all meat from the abattoir will be slaughtered according to halal practices. This method will only be used when specifically requested by herdsmen, and the process will be overseen by an Imam. This halal slaughtering is expected to occur once a week.
New Market Opportunities for Herdsmen
Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo highlighted that this certification opens up new market opportunities for herdsmen, not just in Malta but also in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
“This certification builds on the government’s commitment to invest in the abattoir and enhance the profitability of our herdsmen,” he stated.
Refalo also noted that this initiative aligns with the government’s vision of embracing diversity and respecting different cultural practices.
Transforming the Abattoir into a Model Facility
Stefan Cachia, the director general of the abattoir, expressed pride in this achievement, stating that the certification is part of a broader transformation of the Marsa complex.
“This facility has evolved from one that the European Union considered shutting down to a showcase of quality and innovation,” he said.
Cachia emphasized that the abattoir is committed to producing high-quality meat that meets the needs of all clients, regardless of their religious beliefs.
A Step Towards Inclusivity
The announcement of halal certification for Malta’s meat production is a significant development that not only enhances the local economy but also promotes inclusivity and respect for diverse cultural practices. With this certification, Malta is poised to expand its reach in the global halal market, benefiting both herdsmen and consumers alike.
