Indonesia Bolsters International Trade Position Through Halal Certification
| By RRI
Indonesia is strengthening its role in the worldwide halal market by introducing a nationwide mandatory halal certification system set to take effect in October 2026. This initiative aims to increase trust among consumers, open up new market opportunities, and improve the competitive edge of Indonesian goods both at home and abroad.
According to Ahmad Haikal Hasan, who leads the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), the certification program functions as a governmental tool ensuring legal protection and safeguarding consumers. Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Haikal explained that the certification goes beyond religious requirements, serving as an internationally recognized quality benchmark that guarantees products meet proper standards.
He stressed that halal certification has evolved to signify cleanliness, health protection, safety measures, and overall product quality—transforming it from a simple regulatory obligation into a market essential. Haikal described the certification as a means of ensuring customer satisfaction while creating competitive benefits and promoting economic development that is both inclusive and sustainable.
The certification offers particular advantages to small and medium-sized businesses by adding economic worth to their products and enabling greater access to both local and global markets, Haikal observed.
The mandatory halal requirement stems from Law No. 33/2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance and Government Regulation No. 42/2024. This legal framework requires companies to verify that products including food items, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemical goods, and other consumer products comply with halal standards prior to market entry.
Obtaining certification requires businesses to satisfy various conditions related to ingredient procurement, manufacturing facilities, sanitation practices, and transparent supply chain management.
Companies seeking information about compliance requirements and application procedures for the 2026 mandatory halal regulation can access comprehensive resources through BPJPH’s official website, which offers preparatory guidance for meeting the upcoming standards.
