In a bid to enhance its appeal as a tourist destination for Muslim travelers, Hong Kong is exploring the possibility of importing halal food from abroad, according to Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to attract visitors from the Middle East and Southeast Asia, as outlined in last year’s policy address by the Chief Executive.
During an appearance on RTHK’s Overview Policy program, Cheuk emphasized the importance of catering to the needs of Muslim tourists. “While Hong Kong may not have a large Muslim population, we recognize the necessity of providing ample halal food options. There are numerous Muslim-majority countries within ASEAN, and we can leverage this by inviting restaurants to set up here and importing food from these nations,” he stated.
The government’s efforts to create a more Muslim-friendly environment extend beyond food. Plans are underway to encourage hotels to establish prayer facilities, ensuring that Muslim visitors have access to spaces for worship during their stay. Additionally, there is a push to equip taxi drivers with the ability to provide information in Arabic, making it easier for tourists to navigate the city.
These initiatives reflect Hong Kong’s commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings and tapping into the lucrative market of Muslim travelers. With the global halal tourism sector on the rise, the city aims to position itself as a welcoming destination that respects and accommodates the cultural and dietary needs of its visitors.
As Hong Kong continues to develop its strategy, the focus remains on creating an inclusive atmosphere that not only attracts Muslim tourists but also enriches the local cultural landscape. By fostering partnerships with halal food suppliers and enhancing services for Muslim travelers, Hong Kong is poised to become a vibrant hub for halal tourism in the region.
