Coming Soon! Halal Burger Co. Brings a Flavorful Twist to Burgers
A Culinary Hotspot in College Area
Get ready, College Area!
The culinary scene is about to get a major upgrade with the arrival of several exciting new eateries. Among them is Halal Burger Co., set to open its doors at 6353 El Cajon Blvd., in the former Juicy Burgers location. With a lineup that includes Kinchana, Love Letters Pizza, and the Mesa Bar & Grill, the area is heating up and promising a vibrant dining experience this summer.
A Unique Flavor Fusion
Co-owner Ahmed Hagisufi is on a mission to redefine the classic American burger by infusing it with rich African and Mediterranean flavors. “It’s not just your regular burger,” he emphasizes, highlighting the unique taste profile that sets Halal Burger Co. apart. The term “halal,” which means “permissible” in Arabic, signifies that the meat served adheres to specific Islamic dietary laws, ensuring ethical and humane treatment of animals, as well as the absence of forbidden ingredients like pork and alcohol.
A Taste of Tradition
Hagisufi explains that the halal meat used in their burgers is not only ethically sourced but also packed with flavor.
“You’re not just eating the meat; you’re experiencing a blend of spices that elevate the taste,” he notes.
This commitment to quality and flavor is at the heart of Halal Burger Co.’s mission to provide a superior dining experience.
A Journey to San Diego
Originally hailing from Somalia, Hagisufi spent his formative years in Switzerland before relocating to San Diego about 25 years ago. Inspired by the thriving halal dining scene in Europe, particularly in the U.K., he recognized a gap in the market for halal options in the local Muslim community. When the opportunity arose to lease the Juicy Burgers location—conveniently situated near several mosques—he seized it, envisioning a space that caters to both halal diners and those unfamiliar with the concept.
Opening Day: A Special Occasion
Hagisufi aims to have Halal Burger Co. open by Friday, April 18, just in time for Jumu’ah, the holiest day of the week in Islam. This timing reflects his commitment to serving the local Muslim community and providing them with a welcoming dining option.
More Than Just Burgers

In addition to their signature burgers, Halal Burger Co. will also offer a selection of pizzas and chicken wings, with the latter being a specialty of co-owner Abdullahi Salim. This marks the first venture into restaurant ownership for both Hagisufi and Salim, and they are eager to hear feedback from their customers. “We’re open to suggestions,” Hagisufi says, emphasizing their dedication to creating a menu that resonates with diners.
A Fresh Take on a Classic
Hagisufi believes that while Americans have enjoyed burgers for generations, the experience often lacks variety. “We have a little twist,” he promises, inviting diners to explore a new dimension of flavor that goes beyond the traditional burger experience. With Halal Burger Co., guests can expect a delightful fusion of tastes that will leave them craving more.
As Halal Burger Co. prepares to open its doors, the anticipation is building for a dining experience that promises to be both unique and satisfying. With a focus on quality ingredients, ethical practices, and a blend of cultural flavors, this new pizzeria is set to become a beloved addition to the College Area’s vibrant food scene. Whether you’re a lifelong burger lover or new to halal dining, Halal Burger Co. is ready to serve up something special that will tantalize your taste buds.
