Food Wholesaler Faces Charges for Mislabeling Chicken as Halal
Accusations Against Hamil Miah
A man named Hamil Miah has appeared in Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, facing serious allegations of falsely supplying halal chicken to businesses in South Wales. Miah, who was previously the owner of Universal Foods Wholesale Limited in Cardiff, is accused of distributing chicken that did not meet halal standards to various restaurants and takeaways in Cardiff, Newport, and Blaenau Gwent.
Court Proceedings and Claims
During the court proceedings, prosecuting barrister Alex Greenwood stated that Miah’s company failed to conduct proper checks when labeling its food products. In response, Miah’s defense attorney, Benjamin Waidhofer, argued that Miah has denied purchasing or supplying any non-halal meat. Waidhofer emphasized that Universal Foods Wholesale Limited primarily supplied dried foods, not chicken.
Key Details from the Trial
According to reports, the prosecution revealed that Miah had previously informed law enforcement that the sale of halal chicken was managed by a different company owned by a “childhood friend.” Miah defended himself in court by claiming that if the workers in the cutting room, where the chicken was processed, were “lazy or dishonest,” he could not be held accountable for their actions and that they should bear the responsibility.
Prosecution’s Argument
Greenwood challenged Miah’s claims, suggesting that he had made it difficult to determine the true nature of the products he was selling. He described the companies involved as “just badges of convenience behind which you hide,” implying that Miah was using these companies to obscure the truth about the meat being sold.
Ongoing Trial
The trial is still in progress, and the outcome remains to be seen as both sides present their cases. The allegations against Miah highlight the importance of transparency and integrity in the food supply chain, especially when it comes to halal certification.
