Thailand Develops Digital Platform to Support Muslim Tourism
DEPOK – The Halal Science Centre of Thailand at Chulalongkorn University has launched “Halal Route”, a comprehensive mobile application specifically designed to facilitate travel experiences for Muslim visitors exploring Thailand. This digital tool represents Thailand’s strategic approach to capturing a larger share of the growing global Muslim tourism market.
Comprehensive Travel Features
According to Thai PBS World, the country’s English-language news outlet, the application addresses the specific requirements of Muslim travelers by offering trustworthy, comprehensive, and user-friendly information. The platform provides an organized directory of Halal-certified dining establishments, categorized by culinary type, along with locations of nearby mosques and accommodations that provide prayer facilities and Halal meal options.
- Islamic Travel Tools
The app incorporates essential religious features including a Qibla compass for prayer direction, complete daily prayer timetables, and an Islamic calendar system. These integrated tools ensure Muslim travelers can maintain their religious practices while exploring Thailand’s attractions and destinations.
- Multi-Language Accessibility
To maximize its reach and usability, the application offers support in Thai, English, and Arabic languages, ensuring accessibility for both domestic users and international visitors. The app is available as a free download on both iOS and Android mobile platforms.
Growing Muslim Tourism Market
Halal tourism is experiencing rapid expansion, with the IMT-GT region (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand – Growth Triangles) emerging as a primary destination for Muslim travelers seeking culturally and religiously appropriate travel experiences.
The global Muslim travel industry demonstrated significant recovery in 2023, with approximately 145 million Muslim travelers recorded, achieving roughly 90 percent of pre-pandemic travel volumes, according to WebinTravel data. Market projections indicate this figure is expected to reach 168 million travelers by the conclusion of 2024.
Strategic Tourism Development
Thailand’s launch of the Halal Route application reflects the country’s recognition of the substantial economic opportunities within the Muslim tourism sector. By providing dedicated digital infrastructure to support Muslim travelers’ specific needs, Thailand positions itself as a welcoming and accommodating destination for this growing market segment.
The initiative demonstrates how technology can bridge cultural and religious considerations in tourism, creating more inclusive travel experiences while supporting Thailand’s broader tourism industry development goals.
