Expert Shares Essential Guidelines for Selecting Halal, Safe, and Trusted Skincare Products

JAKARTA – Awareness about choosing halal skincare products continues to grow alongside the booming beauty trend, particularly in Indonesia where Muslims comprise the majority population. Industry experts emphasize that selecting halal skincare goes beyond aesthetic concerns—it’s fundamentally about protecting one’s faith and safeguarding against hazardous products.

More Than Skin Deep: The Importance of Halal Skincare

Priyo Wahyudi, Expert of Laboratory at LPPOM MUI, stresses that using halal skincare represents more than just a beauty routine. “Selecting skincare today isn’t merely about caring for your skin—it’s also about preserving your beliefs and ensuring safety. Products that are both halal and safe provide peace of mind while protecting consumers from dangerous ingredients or false claims that frequently trap unsuspecting buyers,” Priyo explained on Tuesday (September 30).

He emphasizes that consumers must become increasingly discerning in their choices, from verifying product legality and understanding ingredient compositions to avoiding exaggerated instant-result promises. These precautions ensure that products are genuinely halal, safe, and suitable for individual skin needs.

“This way, external beauty remains aligned with the faith values one upholds,” he added.

Comprehensive Tips for Choosing Halal and Safe Skincare

Priyo shared several essential guidelines for selecting halal and safe skincare products:

Verify Product Legality

Ensure skincare products display a notification number from the Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), which can be verified through the CEK BPOM website or mobile application. Additionally, confirm the presence of the official BPJPH halal logo on packaging. Since the implementation of Government Regulation 42/2024, displaying the halal logo has become mandatory for halal-certified products.

Exercise Caution with Imported Products

Numerous imported beauty products enter the market without BPOM notification and halal certification, sometimes through smuggling or personal shopping services. For international brands, choose variants that have obtained BPOM notification and halal registration in Indonesia.

Match Products to Your Skin Type

Skincare is highly personal, with individual compatibility varying significantly. Identify your skin type—whether dry, oily, or sensitive—and select products containing appropriate halal active ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, or vitamin C from plant-based sources.

Avoid Exaggerated Claims and Suspiciously Low Prices

Priyo cautions that no skincare product can transform skin instantly. Authentic products typically present realistic claims, such as visible results within 2-4 weeks. Meanwhile, excessive promotional language with prices significantly below market rates should raise suspicions of counterfeit or non-halal products. Consumers need to maintain skepticism toward hyperbolic advertising.

Purchase from Reliable Sources

Products should be obtained through authorized distributors, reputable stores, or official outlets, whether online or offline. Significant price discrepancies can indicate counterfeit products.

Examine Product Composition Carefully

Develop the habit of reading ingredient lists to ensure products are free from hazardous substances such as mercury, excessive hydroquinone, or steroids. Ingredient guidelines can reference Appendix PerBPOM 17:2022 regarding Technical Requirements for Cosmetic Ingredients.

Build Knowledge Through Digital Literacy

Social media can serve as both an information source and potential risk. Consumers can follow official accounts of BPOM, LPPOM, or trusted dermatologists to obtain accurate education. Additionally, joining credible beauty communities helps recognize trends while distinguishing authentic from counterfeit products.

Consider Price and Quality Relationship

If pricing seems excessively low for premium products, there’s a strong likelihood the items are fake. Consumers should understand that price corresponds to quality and safety standards.

Report Suspicious Products

If encountering skincare without distribution permits or questionable halal status, consumers can report them to BPOM, BPJPH, or through official applications like BPOM Mobile. This proactive approach helps protect the broader community.

Supporting Industry Compliance and Consumer Education

Halal skincare has evolved beyond a trend to become a genuine necessity for Indonesia’s predominantly Muslim population. With the approaching implementation of mandatory halal regulations outlined in Government Regulation Number 42 of 2024, consumers must become more intelligent and critical in selecting skincare products.

Beyond achieving beauty, using halal skincare represents a form of protection, safety, and adherence to faith values.

To support this movement, LPH LPPOM offers discussion opportunities through the Halal On 30 program accessible at bit.ly/HalalOn30. This provides practical solutions for business operators to understand certification processes without sacrificing significant time.

Furthermore, the LPPOM MUI Laboratory, accredited under ISO/IEC 17025:2017, provides additional testing services including water resistance tests and vegan testing for cosmetics. Complete information can be accessed through https://e-halallab.com/.
