Saudi Arabia Warns Against Redefining Gaza Ceasefire Terms
JAKARTA – A high-ranking Saudi diplomat has issued a strong warning against attempts to reinterpret or renegotiate the Gaza ceasefire agreement, emphasizing that the terms have already received international endorsement through the UN Security Council.
Call for Commitment to Agreed Framework
Speaking at the Doha Forum 2025 on Saturday, Manal Radwan, Minister Plenipotentiary at Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry, stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the ceasefire agreement.
“We must not remain open to reinterpretation and renegotiation of what has already been agreed upon and formally adopted as a Security Council resolution that received universal support,” Radwan stated.
She cautioned that revisiting fundamental concepts such as ceasefire definitions, disarmament procedures, and Palestinian-led governance in Gaza could derail progress and shift focus away from the conflict’s central issues.
Gaza as Part of Broader Palestinian Issue
Radwan emphasized that Gaza cannot be viewed as an isolated crisis but must be understood within the context of the wider Palestinian struggle.
“Gaza is not a separate case,” she explained. “It represents part of the Palestinian conflict, not merely a Gaza-specific problem.”
The diplomat warned that without maintaining focus on the ultimate political objective—regional security and Palestinian statehood—no ceasefire or humanitarian effort can achieve lasting success.
Breaking the Cycle of Violence
Reflecting on past patterns, Radwan noted a recurring cycle of conflict, international intervention, humanitarian aid, political exhaustion, and renewed violence.
“We’ve witnessed this scenario repeatedly,” she said. “A war erupts in Gaza, the international community engages, humanitarian assistance is pursued, then political fatigue sets in, and we forget—only to see another, more violent cycle emerge.”
She stressed that without fulfilling Palestinian rights, security remains elusive for everyone, including Israel, the region, and the global community.
Two-State Solution as Path Forward
Radwan pointed to widespread international consensus supporting the two-state solution as the only viable path forward. She called on the international community to translate this agreement into concrete implementation measures.
The minister insisted that maintaining the established framework, preventing any erosion of agreed definitions, and linking implementation directly to Palestinian statehood are essential for sustainable peace.
Current Ceasefire Status
The ceasefire agreement, which began on October 10, brought an end to a two-year Israeli military campaign that resulted in over 70,000 deaths, predominantly women and children, and nearly 171,000 injuries since October 2023.
The first phase of the agreement includes the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, with subsequent phases aimed at rebuilding Gaza and establishing new governance structures.
