Saudi Arabia Tightens Rules: Pilgrims Banned from Lying Down in Masjidil Haram

JAKARTA – Saudi Arabian authorities have implemented stricter regulations at the Grand Mosque (Masjidil Haram) in Mecca, prohibiting pilgrims from spreading prayer mats for sleeping or lying down in corridors and public areas surrounding the holy site.

The directive aims to ensure smooth flow of worshippers and prevent congestion in the sacred mosque, particularly during peak prayer times when millions gather for worship.

Maintaining Clear Pathways Essential

Ichsan Marsha, spokesperson for the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, emphasized on Friday (December 12) that all pilgrims must refrain from resting in hallways, corridors, or communal spaces. “These areas must remain clear to prevent disruption to the movement of worshippers,” he stated.

While not entirely new, the regulation has been reinforced due to the increasing number of pilgrims arriving in Mecca as the peak pilgrimage season approaches. The practice of some worshippers resting inappropriately creates potential blockages in circumambulation (tawaf) routes, prayer hall access points, and mosque entrances, especially during busy hours.

Emergency Response Concerns

The restriction also addresses safety considerations. When corridors are occupied by resting pilgrims, emergency response teams face difficulties moving quickly during medical incidents or other urgent situations. In a venue as crowded as the Grand Mosque, even seconds of delay can significantly impact pilgrim safety.

Saudi authorities stress that maintaining unobstructed movement is part of proper etiquette and respect for the holy sanctuary. “Corridors and public spaces are shared facilities that must be preserved. Converting them into resting areas contradicts the spirit of hajj worship,” Ichsan explained.

Digital Registration Encouraged

Beyond behavioral enforcement, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is urging pilgrims to update their information through the Nusuk Hajj digital platform. This system is designed to streamline administrative processes, verify identities, and provide current information regarding hajj regulations and services.

“We hope that with better organized data, no pilgrim will experience service delays or get lost due to technical issues,” Ichsan added.

The Saudi government emphasizes that discipline and order are not merely ground rules but integral parts of worship itself. Mutual respect and prioritizing collective interests over personal convenience represent a moral responsibility for every pilgrim, not just officials.
