JAKARTA – In the northern Kashmir town of Sopore, an act of humble giving has captured hearts and demonstrated the true meaning of charitable intention. A single egg, valued at merely six rupees, became the catalyst for raising over ₹226,000 (approximately $3,000) to complete a stalled mosque construction project.

The mosque project in Mal Mapan Pora village had been progressing steadily until financial constraints forced work to stop. Refusing to give up, the mosque committee organized a community fundraising drive during Eid, welcoming any contributions villagers could manage.

The turning point came when committee member Naseer Ahmad approached a impoverished widow who lived with her son in a deteriorating home. Despite having virtually nothing—no savings and barely enough food—she wanted to support the mosque project.

Her entire contribution? A single egg.

Rather than dismissing this modest gift, the committee recognized its deeper significance. They decided to auction the egg, allowing the community to assign its true worth.

An Auction That Moved Hearts

Naseer Ahmad initiated the bidding with ₹10 from his own funds. What happened next exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Over three days, the auction evolved into something far greater than a simple fundraiser—it became a communal tribute to sincere sacrifice and shared values. Bids escalated dramatically as residents recognized the profound meaning behind the widow’s donation.

Local entrepreneur Danish Hameed ultimately won with a ₹70,000 bid, bringing the total raised to ₹226,350.

In an interview with the BBC, Danish reflected: “Everyone knew the egg came from someone who had almost nothing. That thought stayed with me throughout the auction.”

Preserving the Legacy

The story’s impact extends beyond the funds raised. Naseer Ahmad plans to have the egg preserved and framed as an enduring symbol of pure-hearted giving, hoping it will remind future generations that sincerity outweighs material wealth.
