Jakarta, Indonesia – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrated unprecedented success in its tourism industry throughout 2024, achieving remarkable visitor numbers that demonstrate the effectiveness of its economic transformation initiatives. According to the Ministry of Tourism’s comprehensive annual statistical analysis, the nation attracted 30 million international visitors, representing a significant 8% growth compared to the previous year’s figure of 27.4 million tourists.

This impressive performance aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 development framework, which prioritizes economic diversification away from oil dependency while establishing Saudi Arabia as a premier global destination for travelers worldwide.

Financial Impact Exceeds Expectations

The tourism sector’s financial contribution reached substantial heights in 2024, generating total revenue of SR284 billion (approximately $75.7 billion), marking an 11% increase from the previous year. International visitors alone contributed SR168.5 billion to the economy, demonstrating a remarkable 19% jump from 2023’s SR141.2 billion figure.

The domestic tourism market also showed robust performance, with 86.2 million Saudi residents traveling within their own country and spending SR115.3 billion, reflecting a 5% increase year-over-year. This balanced growth between international and domestic tourism indicates the sector’s comprehensive development across all market segments.

Infrastructure Development Drives Growth

Several strategic initiatives have contributed to this tourism boom. The Kingdom has implemented progressive visa policies, including an electronic visa system serving 63 countries and a convenient 96-hour transit visa for stopover passengers. These simplified entry procedures have significantly reduced barriers for international visitors.

Massive infrastructure investments have accompanied these policy changes, with the addition of 53,000 new hotel rooms annually and the development of transformative mega-projects. Notable developments include the futuristic NEOM city, the entertainment hub Qiddiya, and the luxury Red Sea Project, all designed to offer unique experiences for different traveler preferences.

Religious and Leisure Tourism Balance

While religious tourism maintains its importance with 35.8 million Umrah pilgrims visiting the holy sites—a 33% increase from the previous year—secular tourism has emerged as the dominant segment. Non-religious travel now accounts for 59% of all inbound visits, with leisure tourism representing 24% of arrivals, family and friend visits comprising 22%, and business or educational travel making up the remainder.

Makkah alone welcomed 17.4 million overnight visitors, highlighting the continued significance of religious pilgrimage while demonstrating the city’s growing appeal for extended stays.

Regional Market Performance

Egypt emerged as the leading source market, sending 3.2 million visitors to Saudi Arabia throughout 2024. The Asia-Pacific region collectively contributed 9.7 million tourists, showcasing the Kingdom’s growing appeal across diverse international markets.

The Saudi Tourism Authority’s promotional efforts, including the “Saudi Summer 2025” campaign with its “Color Your Summer” theme, have focused on six key destinations while emphasizing cultural heritage and adventure tourism opportunities, particularly in the Aseer region.

Economic Significance Grows

Tourism’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product reached SR498 billion, representing 12.45% of the national economy compared to 11.5% in the previous year. This sector has generated employment for over 2.5 million people, demonstrating its role as a significant job creator.

The Kingdom achieved distinction among G20 nations for leading international tourist arrival growth between January and July 2024. Compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels, Saudi Arabia recorded a 73% increase in overall arrivals and an extraordinary 656% surge in leisure tourism specifically.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia maintains ambitious targets under its Vision 2030 framework, aiming to welcome 150 million annual visitors by the end of the decade. This goal is supported by committed investments totaling $800 billion across various tourism-related projects and infrastructure developments.

The Kingdom’s transformation from a primarily religious tourism destination to a diversified travel hub offering leisure, business, and cultural experiences represents one of the most significant shifts in the global tourism landscape. With continued investment in infrastructure, simplified visa processes, and innovative destination development, Saudi Arabia appears well-positioned to achieve its ambitious visitor targets while contributing substantially to economic diversification efforts.

The success of 2024 establishes a strong foundation for continued growth, suggesting that the Kingdom’s tourism sector will remain a key driver of economic development and international engagement in the coming years.
