Halal Tourism Conference to Highlight Muslim Travel Patterns

New Index to Reveal Muslim Travel Preferences and Market Potential

This year’s International Halal Tourism Conference in Europe will introduce an index examining Muslim travelers’ habits and emerging trends, illuminating a market valued at millions for the UK tourism sector.

The conference, scheduled to take place in Andalucia, Spain, later this month, will present the Muslim Travel Index Europe 2014. This index draws on travel research from residents of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia to identify current travel preferences and perceptions within Muslim communities.

Substantial Market Growth Projected

Recent data indicates that the halal tourism industry was valued at £84bn (US$140bn, €106bn) in 2013, accounting for approximately 13 percent of worldwide travel spending. This figure is projected to climb to £193bn (US$140bn, €147bn) by 2020. In London alone, approximately 13,400 Muslim-owned enterprises comprise 33.6 percent of the capital’s total small and medium-sized enterprises.

Additionally, research from VisitBritain revealed that Middle Eastern visitors are the highest-spending tourists among all UK inbound travelers. The average Kuwaiti visitor contributes £4,000 (US$6,646, €5,062) to the UK economy, significantly surpassing the £343 (US$570, €434) spent by the typical French tourist.

Tasneem Mahmood, director of Birmingham-based event organizers CM Media, noted that the recent Muslim Travel Index Europe 2014, which surveyed tourists from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and UAE traveling to Europe, found that 93 percent considered it important that their destination country accommodates a halal lifestyle. She emphasized that this demonstrates clear demand and presents an opportunity for UK companies to address this market need. She predicted that serving the halal tourism market could potentially generate millions of pounds for UK businesses.

Conference to Unite Industry Stakeholders

The two-day conference will welcome approximately 500 delegates and exhibitors from the Middle East, Far East, and Europe, including those currently operating in halal tourism and countries seeking guidance to enter the sector. Scheduled speakers include Chris Nader, Vice President for IMEA development at Kempinski Hotels, Esthy Reko Astuti, Director General from Indonesia’s tourism ministry, and Elnur Seyidli, co-founder of HalalBooking.com.
