Why Halal Food Attracts Both Muslim and Non-Muslim Tourists

Introduction

In recent years, halal food has not only been associated with the religious needs of Muslims. In many tourist destinations around the world, halal food has begun to attract the attention of people from different backgrounds, including non-Muslims. This phenomenon shows that the concept of halal is now becoming part of the global culinary experience.

The growth of international tourism has also increased attention to the needs of Muslim travelers. Many countries have started to develop halal tourism by providing facilities that are friendly to Muslim visitors, including restaurants that serve halal food. Interestingly, halal food is not only consumed by Muslims but is also increasingly tried by non-Muslim tourists who want to experience new types of cuisine.

Background of the Study

A study published in 2024 in the Journal of Islamic Marketing explored the experiences of Muslim and non-Muslim tourists when consuming halal food. The research aimed to understand how tourists from different religious backgrounds perceive halal food and what factors influence their experiences when trying it.

The research was conducted in Yuanjia Village, a well-known culinary tourism destination in China that offers a variety of halal street foods. This location was chosen because it attracts many visitors from different cultural and religious backgrounds, making it an ideal place to study tourists’ perceptions of halal food.

Research Method

The researchers used a qualitative research method. They conducted in-depth interviews with tourists who had tried halal food at the destination.

The research was conducted between October and December 2019. Through convenience sampling, the researchers carried out a total of 36 interviews. These interviews involved 16 Muslim tourists and 20 non-Muslim tourists.

Through interviews, the researchers asked participants about their reasons for trying halal food, their impressions of the food, and the factors that influenced their overall dining experience.

Research Findings

  • Religious Importance for Muslim Tourists

For Muslim tourists, the most important factor when choosing food is whether it is halal. They pay attention not only to the halal label but also to how the food is prepared. Muslim tourists want to make sure that the ingredients, cooking process, and serving methods follow Islamic dietary rules.

Trust in the restaurant or food vendor is also very important. When Muslim tourists feel confident that the food is truly halal, they feel more comfortable and can enjoy their dining experience without worry.

  • Taste and Food Quality

One of the key findings of the research is that taste remains an important factor for all tourists. Both Muslim and non-Muslim participants evaluate food based on flavor, aroma, texture, and presentation.

If halal food has good taste and quality, tourists are more likely to try it again. This finding shows that culinary quality plays a major role in attracting tourists to halal food.

  • Perception of Cleanliness and Food Safety

Many non-Muslim participants believed that halal food follows higher standards of cleanliness and safety. They associated halal food with clear preparation processes and controlled ingredients.

Because of this perception, some non-Muslim tourists felt that halal food might be safer or healthier to consume. This positive image encouraged them to try halal food even though they do not follow halal dietary rules.

  • Cultural Experience Through Food

Another important finding is that halal food can offer a cultural experience for tourists. Many travelers enjoy trying local food because it allows them to learn about the culture of a place.

Halal food can introduce visitors to new culinary traditions and cooking methods. For some tourists, trying halal food becomes a way to understand the culture and lifestyle of Muslim communities.

  • Halal Food as Part of the Tourism Experience

The study also shows that halal food can be part of the overall tourism experience. Tourists often look for unique food when visiting a destination. Local halal food can become one of the attractions that make the trip more memorable.

In this context, halal food does not only serve religious needs but also contributes to culinary tourism. Destinations that provide halal food can attract a wider range of visitors.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, halal food has significant potential in the tourism industry. It is important for Muslim travelers who need assurance about the halal status of their food, but it also attracts non-Muslim tourists who are interested in new culinary experiences.

The study suggests that halal food is no longer seen only as a religious symbol. Instead, it is increasingly associated with food quality, cleanliness, cultural value, and unique culinary experiences.

Therefore, providing halal food in tourist destinations can benefit not only Muslim visitors but also travelers from different backgrounds. Halal food can become an important element in developing inclusive and diverse culinary tourism.
