Bangladesh Urged to Capitalize on $3.3 Trillion Global Halal Market
Industry experts are calling on Bangladesh to develop focused strategies, improve production quality, and strengthen marketing efforts to capture a larger share of the massive global halal products market, valued at $3.3 trillion.
Collaborative Approach Needed
Specialists emphasized that all parties involved in producing and selling halal-certified goods must work together to increase the country’s export revenues. These recommendations emerged from a workshop titled “Halal Market, Production Methods, and Certification Process,” hosted by the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) at their Tejgaon office on Saturday.
Workshop Highlights
The event brought together key government and industry figures, including Industries Ministry Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman as chief guest and BCI President Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) as chair. Other notable participants included former Bangladesh Competition Commission director Khalid Abu Naser and officials from the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI). Twenty-two representatives from various stakeholder organizations attended the discussion.
Market Opportunities and Trends
Secretary Rahman highlighted the rapid growth of the global halal sector, noting that consumer interest extends beyond Muslim populations. Non-Muslim buyers are increasingly drawn to halal products because of their health and safety guarantees, he explained.
The halal concept has also expanded significantly beyond food products to include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, tourism, and numerous other industries. Major consumer markets include Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, with European demand also increasing.
Bangladesh’s Potential
Rahman emphasized that Bangladesh, with its Muslim-majority population, possesses significant untapped potential for halal product exports, positioning the country well to benefit from this growing global market.
