Pakistan Advances Climate and Renewable Energy Goals

Pakistan has committed to generating 60 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2030. In addition, the country aims to reduce its projected carbon emissions by 50 percent. These goals are part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability.

Development of a National Carbon Market

Musadik Malik, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, has reaffirmed plans to launch the country’s first national carbon market. This initiative follows discussions with the UN-supported Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C), which is helping several nations build capacity for carbon credit trading under the Paris Agreement.

UN Partnership to Support Climate Action

SPAR6C, managed by the UN Environment Program, is working with Pakistan, Colombia, Thailand, and Zambia to develop carbon trading systems. In Pakistan, the program provides technical assistance, training for students, and pilot projects to establish strong and credible standards for carbon markets.

Commitment to Transparency and Collaboration

Minister Malik stated that Pakistan is committed to building a transparent, inclusive, and effective carbon market. He highlighted the importance of partnerships with international organizations and local private sector players to ensure progress on the country’s climate goals.
