South Korea is rapidly establishing itself as a leading destination for halal-conscious travelers, characterized by a vibrant blend of rich traditions and advanced technology. The country’s appeal to Muslim tourists is growing due to several key factors.
The Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) has initiated significant efforts to enhance South Korea’s infrastructure for halal-conscious travelers. In 2016, KTO President Jung Chang-Soo highlighted the need for the country to improve its tourism offerings to remain competitive. Since then, there has been a notable increase in halal-conscious travelers, particularly from Malaysia and Indonesia, which contribute approximately 5% to South Korea’s annual tourism revenue. This figure is expected to rise as awareness of the country’s Muslim-friendly offerings continues to grow.
To cater to Muslim visitors, KTO has implemented various initiatives. One effective measure has been the categorization of restaurants into four distinct groups: Halal Certified, Self Certified, Muslim Friendly, and Pork-free. This classification simplifies the process for travelers seeking food that aligns with their dietary requirements, with approximately 75% of these establishments located outside of Seoul, thereby enhancing accessibility for halal-conscious travelers.
In addition to dining options, South Korea has made strides in providing prayer facilities. Businesses have been encouraged to establish prayer rooms, and hotels are increasingly offering guests prayer mats and Qibla compasses. Current data indicates that South Korea has 28 prayer rooms available for Muslim travelers, including 11 at major tourist attractions, two at airports, and 15 managed by local Islamic communities.
KTO’s initiatives also focus on education and training programs for travel agents and tour guides to deepen their understanding of Muslim customs and expectations. The goal is to ensure that halal-conscious travelers feel not only accommodated but genuinely welcomed.
The growing number of halal-conscious travelers in South Korea includes families from Muslim-majority regions in Southeast Asia. Many families are drawn to destinations like Busan, which is perceived as friendly and safe for children, offering access to beaches, shopping, and a variety of halal food options. Safety and the availability of halal food are crucial factors influencing travel decisions for these families.
South Korea’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond food and prayer facilities to leisure and transportation. For example, Spa Land in Busan provides separate pools for men and women, catering to the preferences of halal-conscious travelers. The transportation system, including the KTX Train, offers a seamless travel experience from Seoul to Busan, allowing travelers to enjoy the stunning landscapes of South Korea.
Through these ongoing efforts, South Korea is actively cultivating an inclusive environment for Muslim travelers, positioning itself as a top choice for those seeking a seamless and welcoming travel experience.
