Hail Records 170% Tourism Surge as Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Destination Gains Momentum
JAKARTA – Saudi Arabia’s north-central city of Hail has experienced remarkable tourism growth, welcoming over 3 million visitors during the first six months of 2025, according to the Saudi Press Agency. This represents a dramatic 170% increase compared to the 1.1 million visitors recorded during the same period in 2024, with arrivals nearly tripling year-over-year.
Cultural and Natural Assets Drive Growth
The surge reflects growing appetite for rural and cultural tourism experiences, as travelers increasingly seek out the region’s dramatic mountain terrain and rich historical heritage. Hail’s tourism appeal is anchored by two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Jabal Umm Sinman site in Jubbah and the Shuwaymis rock carvings, both showcasing ancient petroglyphs dating back to prehistoric eras.
Festival Programming Attracts Diverse Audiences
Year-round cultural events have become integral to Hail’s tourism strategy. The 2025 Beit Hail Festival, celebrating traditional craftsmanship and artisanal heritage, drew over 27,000 attendees. Meanwhile, the Hail International Arabian Horse Show continues to attract equestrian enthusiasts, competitors, and spectators from throughout Saudi Arabia and international markets.
Infrastructure Investment Fuels Expansion
Responding to increasing visitor demand, Saudi municipal authorities are channeling SAR 179 million into new hospitality infrastructure. Development projects include rural lodge accommodations and the forthcoming Aja Hills complex, which will feature both hotel and resort facilities. Regional officials have also executed new agreements designed to expand tourist routes serving Hail and strengthen the destination’s international marketing presence.
Transportation Connectivity Enhanced
The government has committed SAR 47 million to 13 new road construction projects covering more than 350 kilometers, improving accessibility to and within the region. Looking beyond domestic connections, Saudi Arabia has announced plans for a 785-kilometer high-speed railway linking Riyadh and Doha airports. Upon completion in 2031, this rail line will reduce travel time between the two capital cities to approximately two hours.
Sustainability at the Core
Environmental stewardship remains central to Hail’s development vision. The city’s extensive agricultural sector encompasses more than 15,000 farms across 240,000 hectares. Ongoing conservation initiatives focus on protecting indigenous vegetation and wildlife habitats, ensuring tourism growth aligns with ecological preservation.
The impressive visitor growth positions Hail as an emerging destination within Saudi Arabia’s broader tourism diversification strategy, combining natural wonders, ancient history, and contemporary hospitality infrastructure.
