Saudi Arabia Braces for Third Cold Wave with Temperatures Dropping Below Zero

JAKARTA — Saudi Arabia is experiencing the depths of winter as the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) forecasts the third cold wave of 2025 to sweep across multiple regions of the Kingdom starting Wednesday, with temperatures plummeting below freezing in several areas.

According to Saudi Gazette on Monday, December 29, 2025, the NCM anticipates a dramatic temperature drop across portions of Al-Jouf, Northern Border, Hail, Qassim, and Riyadh regions. Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 3°C and as low as -1°C.

Extreme Weather on Wednesday and Thursday

The significant temperature decline is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, marking the arrival of the season’s third cold front. Previous extreme weather conditions have already impacted northern Saudi regions, including Hail and Tabuk, where mountainous areas have been blanketed with snow.

Impact on Pilgrims

While Mecca and Medina are not directly affected by the severe temperature drops experienced in northern regions, umrah pilgrims will still feel the effects of cold winds, particularly during dawn and night prayers.

Current weather forecasts indicate daytime temperatures in Mecca hovering around 27-30°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to approximately 16°C.

Essential Winter Umrah Preparation Tips

To maintain spiritual focus and physical health during cold weather conditions, pilgrims should prepare thoroughly. Here are key recommendations:

1. Appropriate Clothing Selection

Pilgrims should pack lightweight warm clothing, especially for Fajr and Isha prayers. Thin jackets, scarves, and socks help maintain body temperature. Male pilgrims can wear jackets over their ihram garments, while female pilgrims should choose slightly thicker abayas with comfortable outer layers.

2. Rain Preparedness

Carrying a compact umbrella or lightweight raincoat is advisable. Wear non-slip footwear, as mosque floors and courtyards can become wet and slippery during rainfall.

3. Protective Measures

Wind and dust can cause minor irritation. Masks help protect respiratory passages, while moisturizers prevent skin dryness caused by cold air conditions.

4. Nutritional Maintenance

Maintain regular hydration even without feeling thirsty. Consume warm, nutritious meals regularly. Prepare vitamins and personal medications, particularly for elderly pilgrims.

5. Strategic Timing

When possible, perform tawaf and sa’i during morning or midday hours when temperatures are warmer. Maximize rest periods to preserve stamina throughout worship activities.

6. Spiritual Focus Preservation

Cold weather should not hinder devotional concentration. The cool atmosphere in the Holy Land can provide an ideal opportunity for enhanced focus in prayer, dhikr, and drawing closer to Allah. Maintain sincere intentions regardless of conditions, and support fellow pilgrims to ensure a memorable umrah experience.

The winter season, while challenging, offers pilgrims a unique spiritual atmosphere in which to perform their religious obligations with dedication and mindfulness.
