Street Iftar at Dam Square: How Ramadan Brings Warmth to the Heart of the City
In the center of the city, at Dam Square, a place usually filled with tourists, a different atmosphere could be felt at the end of February. A space known for its crowds and busy movement suddenly turned into a warm place of togetherness as thousands of people gathered for a “street iftar”.
An Iconic Public Space in Amsterdam
Dam Square is one of the most iconic public squares in Amsterdam. Surrounded by historic buildings such as the Royal Palace of Amsterdam and the National Monument, it is usually a meeting point for visitors from around the world. However, during Ramadan, it transforms into a place filled with spiritual meaning and solidarity.
Ramadan Changes the Atmosphere
As sunset approaches, volunteers begin to lay out long mats across the square. Simple foods are arranged neatly—dates, bread, fruits, and warm soup brought by participants. The smell of food slowly fills the cold evening air.
People come from many different backgrounds. Some arrive with family or friends, while others come alone. But in a short time, those differences disappear. They sit side by side, sharing space and food, even with people they have just met.
Diversity Becomes Unity
The Muslim community in the Netherlands is very diverse, coming from countries such as Pakistan, Turkey, Morocco, and many parts of Asia and Africa. In this event, that diversity becomes a source of unity. Even though languages are different, smiles and shared meals become a universal way to connect.
Interestingly, the event is not only attended by Muslims. Many local Dutch people also join, driven by curiosity about Ramadan and the iftar tradition. Some of them sit together with participants and experience the sense of togetherness firsthand.
More Than Just Iftar
More than just breaking the fast, this event also carries a message of solidarity. The street iftar is organized by groups connected to Palestinian solidarity movements in the Netherlands. During the event, participants express support and prayers for people in Gaza and other Palestinian areas affected by conflict.
As maghrib time gets closer, the atmosphere becomes quieter. Conversations slow down. Some people read the Qur’an, while others pray silently.
When the call to prayer is heard, thousands of people break their fast together in a simple way—eating dates and drinking water. The moment feels peaceful and meaningful, creating a rare silence in the middle of a busy European city.
After iftar, participants perform the evening prayer together in the open space. Even though the weather is cold and rainy, the enthusiasm remains strong. The event continues for several hours with high participation.
More than a social gathering, this street iftar becomes a form of “silent da’wah”. Without long speeches, Islamic values such as sharing, caring, and unity are shown through real actions.
A Lasting Impression
For many people—including local residents—this experience offers a new perspective on Ramadan and Muslim life. As night falls and the city lights turn on, the event slowly comes to an end.
The event may only last a few hours, but its meaning lasts much longer.
In the heart of Europe, Ramadan is not only a personal act of worship—it becomes a space where people meet, connect, and share values of solidarity, empathy, and humanity.
