The Role of Generation Z in Strengthening Religious Moderation in Indonesia

Introduction

Indonesia is known as a country with a very high level of diversity, including differences in religion, culture, and social background. In such conditions, maintaining social harmony becomes very important. One of the relevant approaches to achieve this is religious moderation, which refers to practicing religion in a balanced way without being extreme, while emphasizing tolerance and mutual respect.

In understanding the role of Generation Z in religious moderation, this paper is based on the article “Generasi Z dalam Khazanah Moderasi Beragama di Indonesia” by Theguh Saumantri and Selamet Afrian (2024), which discusses the relationship between the characteristics of young people and efforts to maintain social harmony in Indonesia. In today’s modern era, Generation Z plays an increasingly important role as they grow up in a digital environment that shapes them to be more open to differences.

Religious Moderation as a Foundation for Harmony

Religious moderation is not only about personal belief but also about how individuals interact with people from different religious backgrounds. It emphasizes balance, fairness, and tolerance in social life. With this approach, individuals can avoid extreme attitudes that may lead to conflict.

In practice, values such as mutual respect and understanding are essential in creating a harmonious society. Without moderation, diversity—which should be a strength—can instead lead to division and social tension.

Characteristics of Generation Z in the Digital Era

Generation Z is widely known as a generation that is closely connected to technology and the internet. Their daily lives are strongly influenced by social media, which shapes them to be more adaptive and open-minded. They are used to accessing information quickly from both local and global sources.

In addition, Generation Z is highly creative in using technology. They are able to express ideas and opinions through various digital platforms in innovative ways. However, the fast flow of information also brings challenges, especially when not all information can be verified as accurate.

The Role of Generation Z in Religious Moderation

In the context of religious moderation, Generation Z has great potential to act as agents of change. They can use social media as a tool to spread values of tolerance, peace, and mutual understanding to a wider audience. Through creative digital content, these messages can be delivered in ways that are more engaging and easier to understand.

Furthermore, Generation Z also plays a role in promoting interfaith dialogue. Interacting with people from different backgrounds helps broaden perspectives and reduce misunderstandings. Open dialogue can strengthen relationships between different religious communities.

Their involvement in communities and organizations is also an important contribution. Through such activities, they learn cooperation, respect for diversity, and social responsibility.

Challenges Faced by Generation Z

Despite their potential, Generation Z also faces several challenges. One of the main issues is the spread of misinformation through digital media. Without strong digital literacy skills, false information can influence their understanding of religious and social issues.

In addition, exposure to extreme ideologies is another concern. Without proper guidance and understanding, Generation Z may be vulnerable to ideas that contradict the values of tolerance and moderation.

Conclusion

Overall, Generation Z plays a crucial role in strengthening religious moderation in Indonesia. With their open mindset, adaptability, and technological skills, they have the potential to become key drivers in building a more tolerant and inclusive society.

Therefore, it is important to support Generation Z through education, social environments, and positive use of technology so that they can contribute effectively to maintaining harmony in Indonesia’s diverse society.
