Malaysia Strengthens Halal Tourism Through Muslim-Friendly Spa Initiatives

Malaysia has long been recognized as one of the world’s leading destinations for halal tourism. In order to strengthen this position, the country has expanded its strategy into the spa and wellness sector. A new collaboration between the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) and the Association of Malaysian Spas (AMSPA) aims to introduce Muslim-friendly spa guidelines and training for spa operators. This initiative reflects Malaysia’s effort to provide tourism services that are inclusive of Muslim travelers while maintaining international standards.

Partnership to Develop Muslim-Friendly Spa Services

The initiative began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ITC and AMSPA during the ITB Berlin tourism exhibition. Through this collaboration, the two organizations will introduce a Muslim-Friendly Spa Guideline and Training Programme for around 100 spa businesses that are members of AMSPA.

The program includes training modules, capacity-building activities, and a recognition framework to ensure that spa operators understand how to provide services that meet Muslim-friendly standards. By offering clear operational guidelines, the program helps businesses improve their service quality and become more prepared to welcome Muslim travelers.

Standards Based on International Halal Guidelines

The Muslim-friendly spa guidelines were developed by ITC together with the Islamic Science University of Malaysia and AMSPA. These guidelines are aligned with the SMIIC Halal Spa Standards, which are recognized by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The standards focus on several important aspects, including privacy considerations, halal-compliant treatments, and service environments that respect the cultural and religious values of Muslim visitors. At the same time, the guidelines are designed to remain inclusive so that spa services can still be enjoyed by a broader range of international tourists.

Supporting the Visit Malaysia 2026 Campaign

This initiative is closely linked to the government’s Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which aims to attract more international visitors to the country. By improving wellness tourism infrastructure and offering Muslim-friendly spa experiences, Malaysia hopes to appeal particularly to travelers from Muslim-majority countries.

Wellness tourism, including spa and relaxation services, has become an important part of the travel experience. By integrating halal-friendly practices into this sector, Malaysia seeks to create unique tourism offerings that combine relaxation, cultural sensitivity, and hospitality.

Economic Benefits for the Tourism Industry

The development of Muslim-friendly spa services is also expected to support Malaysia’s economy. As the wellness sector expands, it can generate new employment opportunities in spas, hotels, and tourism-related services.

Furthermore, tourism often connects multiple industries such as accommodation, food services, retail, and transportation. When more travelers visit Malaysia for wellness tourism, these related sectors also benefit. This interconnected growth strengthens Malaysia’s broader halal economy.

Malaysia’s Vision for Halal Tourism

The Muslim-friendly spa initiative is part of a larger framework known as the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition Programme led by ITC. This program also includes guidelines for Muslim-friendly accommodations and tourism services.

Through these efforts, Malaysia aims to create a well-structured tourism ecosystem that supports the needs of Muslim travelers while remaining attractive to international visitors from diverse backgrounds.

Malaysia’s collaboration between ITC and AMSPA marks an important step in expanding halal tourism into the wellness sector. By introducing structured guidelines and training for spa operators, the country is strengthening service quality and reinforcing its reputation as a global hub for Muslim-friendly tourism.

As global interest in wellness travel continues to grow, Malaysia’s initiatives are likely to play a key role in attracting visitors who seek travel experiences that align with their cultural and religious values.
