Jordan-Lebanon Economic Partnership Strengthens with 21 Cooperation Agreements
JAKARTA – Jordan and Lebanon have formalized 21 comprehensive cooperation agreements spanning multiple economic sectors, marking a significant strengthening of bilateral ties between the two Arab nations.
Historic Partnership Formalized
The agreements were signed in the presence of Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, following the eighth session of the Jordanian-Lebanese Joint Higher Committee held in Beirut, as reported by Jordan’s official news agency, Petra.
The cooperation framework encompasses energy sector collaboration, electrical grid interconnection, industrial development, trade facilitation, investment promotion, tourism enhancement, transportation infrastructure, and various service industries.
Existing Trade Relations
The partnership builds upon an established commercial relationship between the nations. Data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity reveals that in 2023, Jordan’s exports to Lebanon totaled $101 million, while Lebanese exports to Jordan reached $111 million, demonstrating balanced bilateral trade flows.
Jordan’s Commitment to Lebanese Stability
In joint statements following the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Hassan reaffirmed Jordan’s unwavering support for Lebanon’s security, stability, and sovereignty.
“Jordan will continue, as it always has, to support Lebanon and to stand by its security, stability and sovereignty,” Hassan declared, according to Petra.
He emphasized that this supportive stance represents a fundamental Jordanian policy position, carried out under the continuous guidance of King Abdullah II, who directed him to actively transform the historic bilateral relationship into comprehensive cooperation across all sectors.
Deep Ties Beyond Geography
Prime Minister Hassan noted that despite the absence of a shared physical border, Jordan and Lebanon maintain profound connections through longstanding communication networks, cooperative frameworks, and integration at both governmental and societal levels, spanning economic and cultural domains.
He stated that both nations are dedicated to strengthening these bonds and advancing their partnership, with expectations that the forthcoming phase will witness expanded institutional collaboration serving mutual interests.
Hassan highlighted that the reconvening of the Joint Jordanian-Lebanese Higher Committee demonstrates both sides’ dedication to sustaining regular high-level meetings, reflecting strong fraternal relations.
Implementation and Future Cooperation
The prime minister revealed that both governments agreed to maintain continuous communication and coordination among ministers, officials, and technical teams. This mechanism will ensure proper implementation of the signed agreements while identifying additional areas for future cooperation that benefit both nations and their populations.
The 21 agreements represent a comprehensive roadmap for enhanced economic integration, addressing immediate needs while establishing frameworks for long-term strategic partnership between the two Arab nations.
