Unauthorized Halal Logo Use Discovered at Sungai Petani Food Processing Facility
JAKARTA – Authorities have uncovered a food manufacturing operation in the Sungai Petani area illegally displaying halal certification on its products without obtaining proper authorization from regulatory bodies.
According to Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin, enforcement director at the Kedah Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), the discovery came following inspection operations conducted at a noodle and related food products facility in Bedong, along with a retail outlet on Jalan Angsana in the vicinity. The coordinated raids took place at 11 am on Sunday.
Multi-Agency Enforcement Operation
“KPDN’s Kedah enforcement division carried out a joint operation alongside the Ministry of Health and the Kedah Islamic Religious Affairs Department. The operation focused on examining halal certification and labeling practices at the premises, verifying the status of halal credentials, and ensuring adherence to KPDN regulations and requirements,” he explained in an official statement released Monday.
The investigation revealed that the facility was improperly utilizing the halal certification mark of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) on its merchandise without securing the necessary approvals from competent authorities.
Products and Legal Action
The company specialized in manufacturing various food items, including noodles, kuetiau (flat rice noodles), laksa, tofu, and tempeh. During the enforcement action, authorities confiscated products valued at RM87,057.
The case is currently under investigation pursuant to the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011, which governs the proper use of halal certification marks and protects consumers from misleading claims about product compliance with Islamic dietary requirements.
Significance of Proper Halal Certification
This incident underscores the importance of proper halal certification procedures and the serious consequences of unauthorized use of official halal logos. The JAKIM halal certification mark serves as an assurance to Muslim consumers that products meet strict halal standards, and its unauthorized use undermines consumer trust and violates regulatory frameworks designed to protect the integrity of halal certification systems.
The multi-agency approach to enforcement demonstrates authorities’ commitment to maintaining the credibility of Malaysia’s halal certification process and ensuring businesses comply with established regulations governing halal product labeling and marketing.
