Indonesian Fisheries Ministry and BPJPH Join Forces for Halal Certification of Marine Products
JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has entered into a strategic partnership with the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) to enhance quality assurance for fishery products through halal certification. This collaboration underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring that the nation’s marine products meet safety, quality, and halal standards as mandated by the Halal Product Assurance Law Number 33 of 2014.
Boosting Global Competitiveness Through Halal Assurance
Ishartini, Head of the Marine and Fishery Products Quality Control and Supervision Agency, stated in a press release issued in Jakarta on Friday that halal certification serves as a critical element in enhancing the competitive edge and market acceptance of biological commodities, particularly fishery products.
“This initiative aims to give domestic consumers confidence and assurance that products have undergone every phase of halal production processes,” Ishartini explained.
Formalizing the Partnership
The partnership between the two government bodies was officially established through a memorandum of understanding signed in Jakarta on January 7, 2026. The agreement encompasses several key areas of cooperation, including public education, awareness campaigns, and the promotion of halal product assurance policies.
This collaboration is anticipated to enhance public and business sector understanding of the significance of halal assurance throughout all production phases. Additional components of the partnership include:
- Strengthening marine and fishery product competitiveness via halal certification
- Oversight and monitoring of halal product assurance implementation
- Leveraging quality testing laboratories to facilitate the certification process
Meeting International Standards
Ishartini highlighted that the synergy between her ministry and BPJPH will fortify the quality of Indonesian fishery products, enabling them to compete effectively in international markets with transparent halal guarantees.
The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries emphasized its commitment to maintaining robust and consistent international standards. Currently, Indonesian marine products have successfully entered global markets and gained acceptance in 147 countries worldwide.
Halal as an Economic Growth Driver
Ahmad Haikal Hasan, Head of BPJPH, stressed that halal certification serves a vital function beyond mere regulatory compliance—it acts as a strategic tool for stimulating national economic development.
He explained that the core principle of halal encompasses openness and transparency, which ensures product traceability and cultivates consumer confidence.
Supporting National Economic Goals
This partnership aligns with Indonesia’s broader economic objectives, including efforts to formalize micro-enterprises and expand the halal-certified product market. The government has announced plans to issue 1.35 million free halal certificates in 2026, demonstrating its commitment to supporting small and medium-sized businesses in meeting halal standards.
The collaboration between the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and BPJPH represents a significant step toward strengthening Indonesia’s position as a leading producer of halal-certified marine products in the global marketplace.
