Rising Interest in Asian Destinations Among Middle Eastern Travelers
Middle Eastern travelers are increasingly looking towards Asia for their next vacation, with Thailand and Japan emerging as the most popular choices, according to Agoda, a leading travel booking platform.
Thailand: The Top Choice
Agoda’s Senior Vice President of Supply, Andrew Smith, shared in an email interview that Thailand continues to be the most searched destination for Middle Eastern tourists. Cities like Phuket and Bangkok are particularly popular among travelers from Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the UAE. The recent launch of direct flights by Saudia from Riyadh and Jeddah to Phuket in December 2024 has significantly boosted the island’s appeal to Saudi visitors.
Japan’s Rising Popularity
Japan has also seen a remarkable increase in interest, climbing from the fifth to the third most searched destination for Middle Eastern travelers in 2025. Smith noted that Tokyo, with its unique mix of tradition and modernity, has become a favorite among tourists. The country’s efforts to accommodate Muslim travelers, such as expanding halal dining options and providing prayer spaces, have further enhanced its attractiveness.
Saudi Arabia’s Influence on Travel Trends
Much of the growth in travel demand is being driven by Saudi Arabia, where interest in Asian destinations has surged by 1.7 times. Searches for Japan and South Korea from Saudi Arabia have skyrocketed, increasing more than eight and nine fold year on year, respectively. This trend highlights the growing desire among Saudi travelers to explore new cultures and experiences.
Other Popular Destinations
In addition to Thailand and Japan, other Asian countries like the Philippines, India, and Indonesia are also capturing the attention of Middle Eastern travelers. Cities such as Manila and Bali remain popular choices for those seeking sun, culture, and adventure.
Post-Pandemic Recovery Boosts Travel
The recovery from the pandemic has played a significant role in this travel surge. According to OAG Aviation data, there has been a 23% increase in airline seat capacity from the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific region compared to 2019. This enhanced connectivity makes it easier for travelers to explore a wider range of destinations, fueling interest in both well-known hotspots and emerging locations.
Simplified Visa Processes
Visa facilitation measures have also contributed to the rising demand. For instance, Thailand’s introduction of Electronic Travel Authorisation has streamlined the entry process for Middle Eastern visitors, making travel more accessible.
The Influence of Younger Travelers
A significant portion of the current demand is driven by younger travelers who are influenced by social media and Muslim travel influencers. The Asia-Pacific region is increasingly seen as an aspirational yet accessible destination. Family and group travel is also on the rise, particularly to culturally and religiously familiar places like Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
Importance of Halal-Friendly Features
For many Middle Eastern travelers, having halal-friendly amenities is essential. This includes not only halal-certified dining options but also prayer rooms, Qibla direction markers, foot-washing facilities, and privacy-conscious accommodations. Smith emphasized that properties that clearly communicate their halal credentials through verified listings and visible certifications are likely to gain trust and drive bookings.
Agoda’s Commitment to Muslim Travelers
Agoda is actively working with its partners to meet the needs of Muslim travelers by highlighting features such as prayer rooms, Muslim-friendly washrooms, and larger accommodation options. This approach helps travelers make informed decisions and contributes to a more welcoming experience.
Smith concluded by stating that security, inclusivity, and respect for cultural values are top priorities for Middle Eastern travelers today. Operators who can effectively communicate these values will have a significant advantage in attracting this growing market.
