Indonesia Sets Its Sights on Middle Eastern Markets for Muslim Fashion Exports
Targeting Key Markets
Indonesia is looking to expand its Muslim fashion exports to five key countries in the Middle East: Iran, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Egypt. This strategic move aims to tap into the growing demand for Muslim fashion products in these regions.
Reni Yanita, the director general of small, medium, and miscellaneous industries at the Ministry of Industry, expressed optimism about the potential for growth in the domestic market. She emphasized the importance of enhancing Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global Muslim fashion industry.
A Growing Industry
The Muslim fashion sector is poised for rapid growth in the coming years, driven by the expanding Islamic economic market worldwide. According to the “State of Global Islamic Economy 2023–2024” report from the DinarStandard Institute, Muslim consumer spending across six key sectors is projected to reach an impressive $3.1 trillion by 2027.
In the past five years, spending in these sectors has increased by 4.8%, reaching $2.29 trillion in 2022. The six sectors identified for significant growth include food, fashion, media and recreation, travel, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.
Fashion’s Promising Future
Among these sectors, the Muslim fashion industry stands out, with consumption expected to hit $428 billion by 2027. This positions it as the second-largest sector in the Islamic economy. In Indonesia alone, the consumption of halal goods and services is projected to reach $330.5 billion by 2025, with ready-to-wear products ranking second in the sharia market.
Collaboration for Success
To bolster the capabilities of Indonesia’s Muslim fashion industry, Yanita urged business leaders to innovate and develop their products. She encouraged collaboration within the domestic ready to wear industry, which employs approximately 2.7 million workers across 569,000 businesses, according to the 2022 Micro and Small Industry Profile and the 2022 Indonesian Manufacturing Industry Statistics.
By fostering partnerships and leveraging local resources, Indonesia aims to establish itself as a leader in the modest fashion market, ensuring that the country can thrive in its own right.
With a clear focus on the Middle Eastern market and a commitment to enhancing the domestic Muslim fashion industry, Indonesia is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for Muslim fashion products. By encouraging collaboration and innovation, the country can strengthen its presence in the global market and become a key player in the Islamic economy.
