BPJPH Chief Announces Mandatory Halal Certification for Food and Beverage Products Beginning 2026
Starting in 2026, micro and small enterprises (MSMEs) will be required to obtain halal certification for their products, according to Ahmad Haikal Hasan, Director of the Halal Product Guarantee Administration Agency (BPJPH).
During a working session with the DPR RI’s Commission VIII at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex on Monday, July 14, Haikal explained that the certification requirement extends beyond food and beverage items to include various other product categories.
“We have announced that 2026 marks the implementation year for mandatory halal certification of non-food and non-beverage products,” Haikal stated during the meeting.
Broader Product Categories Included
The certification mandate will encompass several additional product types that require special consideration for processing in the upcoming year, including:
- Pharmaceutical products and health supplements
- Cosmetic items
- Chemical products
- Genetic engineering products
Haikal specifically mentioned corn as an example of genetic engineering products that will fall under the new requirements.
“Regarding genetic engineering, we conducted a site visit to corn harvesting operations last month. Given that corn has become part of genetic engineering under national programs, this will also be a priority area for us,” he explained.
Extended Coverage Areas
The halal certification obligation will also apply to textile manufacturing and office supplies, according to Haikal.
“This includes textiles and writing materials. Even medical equipment used in hospitals will be covered, not just food products,” he noted.
The comprehensive approach reflects the agency’s commitment to ensuring halal compliance across diverse industries, moving beyond traditional food and beverage sectors to encompass a wide range of consumer and industrial products.
