Al Baraka Bank Egypt Establishes Strategic Partnership with ICIEC Through $100 Million Agreement

Al Baraka Bank Egypt has entered into a significant partnership with the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC), finalizing two major agreements totaling $100 million to enhance Islamic trade finance operations.

Agreement Structure

The partnership consists of two complementary financial instruments:

Documentary Credit Insurance Policy (DCIP) – $50 Million

This policy specifically targets export transactions supported by Letters of Credit for the bank’s corporate and small-to-medium enterprise (SME) exporters. The DCIP provides specialized risk management tools to address non-payment risks from international banks, enabling exporters to confidently enter new markets and scale their cross-border trading activities.

Bank Master Policy (BMP) – $50 Million

The BMP is structured to facilitate Islamic trade finance transactions and represents a significant advancement in Islamic finance development, particularly in supporting corporate and SME operations.

Leadership Perspectives

The formal agreement was executed between Dr. Khaled Khalfallah, ICIEC’s Chief Executive Officer, and Mr. Ahmed Atteya, Al Baraka Bank Egypt’s Head of Financial Institutions, with senior international officials in attendance.

Kareem Namek, Chief Financial Markets at Al Baraka Bank Egypt, emphasized the bank’s dedication to providing comprehensive, Sharia-compliant banking solutions. He highlighted how these agreements represent a fundamental component of their strategy to minimize credit exposure, expand trade finance capabilities, and contribute to sustainable economic development. Namek stressed that innovation and transparency in financial services are crucial for maintaining their leadership position in Islamic banking while supporting both domestic economic growth and the broader Islamic finance sector.

Strategic Impact

These agreements are designed to strengthen Al Baraka Bank Egypt’s corporate and SME clients’ capacity to expand export operations across international markets. The partnership offers innovative financial solutions that promote market stability, encourage investment inflows, and support sustainable development objectives.

The collaboration aligns with Al Baraka Bank Egypt’s strategic vision while leveraging ICIEC’s expertise in supporting trade and investment activities across the 57 member nations of the Islamic Development Bank Group. Through Sharia-compliant insurance mechanisms, ICIEC continues to facilitate developmental initiatives across these markets.

Market Significance

This partnership demonstrates the growing sophistication of Islamic finance instruments and their role in facilitating international trade. By providing comprehensive risk coverage and innovative financial solutions, the agreement positions Al Baraka Bank Egypt to better serve its clients’ international expansion needs while adhering to Islamic banking principles.
