Upgraded Halal Protocol with Malaysia Opens New Export Opportunities

New Zealand’s meat sector has welcomed government efforts to ease non-tariff barriers for halal-certified exports to Malaysia, viewing the move as a key step toward unlocking greater market potential.

The Core of New Zealand’s Meat Trade

Meat Industry Association (MIA) chief executive Sirma Karapeeva emphasized that halal processing remains a cornerstone of New Zealand’s red meat industry, enabling access to Muslim consumers across the globe. “New Zealand has been exporting halal-certified meat for nearly 50 years,” she said, adding that the updated arrangement could further expand trade in Malaysia’s 35-million-strong market.

Deepening Regulatory and Cultural Ties

The upgraded halal protocol is expected to strengthen New Zealand’s long-standing relationship with Malaysia by fostering mutual understanding of each country’s certification systems. Although formal procedures are still in progress, Karapeeva noted the agreement’s potential to streamline trade and enhance cooperation between halal authorities.

Growing Export Value and Global Reach

Halal-certified meat exports remain a major contributor to New Zealand’s economy, reaching 63 markets and generating $2.9 billion in export revenue last year. Exports to Malaysia alone rose from $65 million to $79 million in the year ending September 30, 2025.

“While Malaysia is not among our largest meat markets, it holds special significance as a global leader in halal standards,” Karapeeva concluded.
