New Zealand PM Champions Halal Meat Initiative to Unlock Asian Markets

Luxon Eyes Billion-Dollar Opportunity Through Malaysian Trade Partnership

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has emphasized a strategic initiative to expand halal meat exports during his appearance at the East Asia Summit, highlighting the untapped potential in Malaysia’s substantial meat market.

The government initially unveiled its commitment to enhancing halal meat commerce with Malaysia in July. Speaking from Kuala Lumpur during the ASEAN East Asia Summit’s second day, Luxon described the halal agreement as really important for New Zealand’s economic growth.

Malaysia represents a US$1.4 billion meat market across all categories, yet New Zealand currently captures merely $60 million of that trade. With Malaysia importing between 75 to 95 percent of its meat products, Luxon identified enormous expansion possibilities.

“When I first came here, sat down with Prime Minister Anwar, this was our number one thing to focus on, because it can unlock a lot of growth,” the Prime Minister stated.

Standardization Hurdles Require Systematic Solutions

While an agreement has been reached, implementation awaits ratification alongside necessary audits of meat processing facilities. Luxon acknowledged that New Zealand’s halal certification system suffers from inconsistency problems.

“The standards have been applied a little inconsistently and we’ve got businesses here like Silver Fern Farms who are selling already into Malaysia but there’s many other businesses… they don’t want to get in a situation where they’re selling product to Malaysia and somewhere it gets stopped on the border because it hasn’t been a certain standard which someone’s interpreted differently.”

The certification overhaul would simultaneously benefit New Zealand’s domestic Muslim community, according to Luxon.

Regional Integration Strategy Extends Beyond Malaysia

The Prime Minister also celebrated the forthcoming upgrade to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN Southeast Asian nations, building upon the existing $30 billion trading relationship. This year marks New Zealand’s 50th anniversary of commercial relations with ASEAN.

Luxon expressed his vision for New Zealand to become more invested and more embedded within the region, recognizing these emerging middle-class economies as prime consumers of New Zealand products.

“We’re very invested into Southeast Asia, there’s huge opportunity, that’s why I’ve had I think 42 Prime Ministerial visits into this region, and that’s been very deliberate because we want to anchor New Zealand’s future into this part of the world.”

His diplomatic tour continues to South Korea, New Zealand’s fifth-largest trading partner, where another Comprehensive Strategic Partnership upgrade awaits discussion.
