Syria and Saudi Arabia Forge Oil and Gas Partnership in Post-War Reconstruction Effort

JAKARTA – Syria and Saudi Arabia have established a strategic partnership in the energy sector through the signing of multiple oil and gas agreements, marking a significant step in Syria’s economic reconstruction efforts.

Strategic Energy Agreements

The Syrian Petroleum Company, a state-owned enterprise, has finalized four separate agreements with Saudi Arabian companies. The signing ceremony took place at the Energy Ministry headquarters in Damascus, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

According to official statements, these agreements focus on providing technical support services and advancing the development of Syria’s oil and gas fields. However, the specific Saudi companies involved in the deals have not been publicly disclosed.

New Gas Field Discoveries

This partnership comes on the heels of promising developments in Syria’s energy sector. On November 19, Youssef Qaballawi, CEO of the Syrian Petroleum Company, announced the discovery of five new gas fields in the western Al-Sahel region, representing significant potential for the country’s energy future.

Syria’s energy resources remain substantial despite years of conflict. Based on 2015 data, the country holds proven gas reserves of approximately 8.5 trillion cubic feet. Daily production of non-associated gas averages around 250 million cubic meters, accounting for 58 percent of Syria’s total gas output. Gas associated with oil production represents 28 percent of output, with the majority originating from areas east of the Euphrates River.

Rebuilding the Energy Infrastructure

Under the leadership of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Syria’s new government has prioritized revitalizing the nation’s energy sector as part of broader reconstruction initiatives. The administration is actively pursuing agreements and memorandums of understanding with various governments and international institutions to support economic recovery following 14 years of devastating civil war.

These Saudi-Syrian energy agreements represent a crucial component of the country’s strategy to rebuild its infrastructure and restore economic stability. The partnership demonstrates growing regional cooperation in supporting Syria’s transition toward recovery and reconstruction.

The collaboration between the two nations signals a new chapter in bilateral relations and reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to contributing to regional stability through economic engagement.
