Sudanese Military Leader Visits Saudi Arabia Amid Ongoing Conflict with Paramilitary Forces

JAKARTA – The head of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, touched down in Saudi Arabia on Monday for an official state visit, even as fierce fighting continues between government forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group back home.

Limited Information on Visit’s Purpose

Saudi Arabia’s official news outlet SPA confirmed al-Burhan’s arrival in the kingdom but provided no specifics regarding his diplomatic itinerary or the topics to be discussed during his stay.

Saudi Arabia’s Role in Peace Efforts

The kingdom serves as a key member of the international Quad mechanism, a diplomatic framework that brings together Saudi Arabia, the United States, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. This group put forward a proposal in September calling for a 90-day humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan as an initial phase toward establishing a permanent end to hostilities, followed by a nine-month transitional period culminating in an independent civilian administration.

Devastating Impact of Sudan’s Civil War

The armed confrontation between Sudan’s national military and the RSF paramilitary organization erupted in April 2023 and has since resulted in thousands of civilian and combatant deaths. The violence has also forced millions of Sudanese citizens to flee their homes, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

The timing of al-Burhan’s diplomatic mission to Riyadh underscores the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict that has devastated the northeastern African nation for nearly two years.
