PM Shehbaz Sharif Pushes for Stronger Export Strategy

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has endorsed Pakistan’s new Halal Meat Export Policy during a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Thursday, 18 December 2025. He instructed officials to deliver a detailed three-year plan within two weeks, outlining actionable steps to increase the country’s halal meat export volume and competitiveness.

National Coordination to Strengthen Industry Reform

PM Shehbaz underscored that full collaboration between federal ministries and provincial governments is essential to expand Pakistan’s presence in Muslim markets as well as the wider global halal sector. He emphasised the importance of improving cold storage capacity, production facilities, and related infrastructure to support sustainable industry growth.

Focus on International Standards and Global Certification

The prime minister directed authorities to align livestock production with international quality standards to enhance Pakistan’s standing in export markets. The government will also facilitate international certification for slaughterhouses and support bilateral registration processes to unlock new trade destinations.

Disease-Free Supply Chains and Cost Efficiency

PM Shehbaz highlighted the urgency of developing specialised centres across the country to improve nutritional value and ensure disease-free halal meat supply. He called for cost-effective export models built on global best practices to strengthen Pakistan’s competitive advantage, especially within regional markets.

Major Export Potential Despite High Domestic Output

Officials reported that Pakistan currently produces 6 million metric tons of halal meat annually. After meeting domestic consumption, a significant surplus remains available for export. Ongoing initiatives aim to improve product packaging and enhance production capacity to meet international demand.

Government Leadership and Multi-Stakeholder Engagement

The meeting was also attended by senior government leaders, including the Ministers for Commerce, National Food Security, and Economic Affairs, alongside advisors and key industry representatives. The session reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting the sector’s modernisation and long-term export growth.
