Slaw Burger’s Bold Expansion: New Halal Chain Takes Suburban Chicago by Storm
A Mission-Driven Vision
Asad Khan from Addison has ambitions that extend far beyond serving burgers. The owner of the emerging Slaw Burger chain articulates his business philosophy with clarity: “Our purpose is to feed the hungry. A business needs purpose – ours is giving back to the community.”
With lower operational costs in developing nations targeted by his charitable programs, restaurant profits already sustain approximately 500 people daily. Khan’s ultimate goal involves expanding enough locations to feed 5,000 people each day.
Expansion Timeline: From Palatine to Regional Dominance
Palatine – The Foundation Stone
The inaugural location at 1912 N. Rand Road opened early this year after Khan identified a significant gap in halal dining options. “We recognized there was genuine demand for halal food in Palatine,” Khan explained.
Schaumburg – Strategic Flagship Launch
Success in Palatine drove the opening of their flagship store at 1322 N. Roselle Road in Schaumburg last month. “We witnessed the demand in Palatine, with many customers traveling from Schaumburg. We believe Schaumburg represents an incredible opportunity,” Khan noted.
Plainfield – Next Phase Rolling Out
The third location at 13530 Route 59 in Plainfield is scheduled to launch within two months. Khan has already secured the fourth location, which will be announced following Plainfield’s opening.
Product Excellence: Premium Quality for Diverse Communities
Certified Halal Standards
Slaw Burger features 100% Angus beef certified by Halal Monitoring Services, serving not only Muslim customers but also appealing to those following Jewish kosher dietary requirements.
Signature Cole Slaw Creation
Khan’s confidence in his restaurant’s signature cole slaw is evident in the brand name itself – a testament to the quality he believes sets them apart.
Community Hub Concept
Each Slaw Burger location is designed as a comfortable hangout featuring television screens for sports viewing. The interior design reflects local community character, incorporating references to area high schools plus other regional elements.
“I envision this as a truly community-driven business,” Khan emphasizes, planning to host various local events at each location.
Social Impact: Local Contributions Meet Global Outreach
Monthly Donation Program
Khan personally provides 200-500 sandwiches monthly to Chi-Care, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization, funding these contributions from his own resources.
International Relief Efforts
Beyond local contributions, Khan channels funds toward humanitarian programs in his native Pakistan plus other developing countries worldwide.
Business Strategy
Khan has developed a scalable business model enabling swift new location openings. This approach begins by identifying underserved areas lacking quality halal dining options, then establishing strong community presence before expanding to surrounding regions.
The success of this model demonstrates how addressing specific community needs while maintaining high food quality standards can create sustainable growth opportunities in the competitive restaurant industry.
