Prominent MUI Economics Leader Lukmanul Hakim Passes Away

JAKARTA – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) is mourning the loss of one of its key figures. Lukmanul Hakim, who served as Chairman of MUI’s Economics Division, has passed away.

The sad news was announced by MUI’s Secretary General, Amirsyah Tambunan. According to Amirsyah, Lukman died at Harapan Kita Heart Hospital in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at approximately 12:00 PM local time.

“On behalf of the Leadership Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council, we say Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return). We pray that he had a blessed ending, and that his family is granted patience,” said Buya Amirsyah in Jakarta.

Remembering Lukmanul Hakim’s Contributions

Buya Amirsyah remembered Lukman as a highly active leader who headed both MUI’s Economics Division and the MUI Waqf Institution. During his lifetime, the deceased also served as Director General of LPPOM MUI (the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Assessment Institute).

“Hopefully this will become a continuous charity for him. We hope his family can follow in his footsteps,” said Buya Amirsyah.

The MUI Secretary General expressed that the organization feels a profound loss with Lukman’s passing.

Before his death, Lukman was serving as Executive Chairman of MUI’s 11th National Conference (Munas XI), scheduled to take place November 20-23, 2025, at Hotel Mercure Ancol in North Jakarta.

Buya Amirsyah prayed that the late Kiai Lukman would be forgiven for all his sins and accepted by Allah SWT.

Champion of Islamic Economic Development

Lukmanul Hakim was recognized as an intellectual Muslim scholar who actively championed Islamic economic development, productive waqf studies, and issues surrounding food and energy sovereignty.

During the 2025 Islamic Economic Annual Session, he emphasized that two strategic issues—food and energy sovereignty—would become official MUI recommendations to the government.

In previous years, Lukmanul Hakim also advocated for prioritizing local premium products in food distribution systems as a form of Islamic economic self-sufficiency.

Additionally, Lukman was outspoken on issues such as halal certification as an empowerment tool for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He described halal certification as “the only choice” to strengthen the Islamic economy, ensuring that SMEs focus not only on worldly profits but also on halal values.

He also promoted the role of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as drivers of regional economic development through strategic collaboration—a vision he believed would strengthen the Islamic economic foundation from the grassroots level.

Throughout his life, Lukman was known as a scholar who not only offered criticism but also sought concrete solutions. On numerous occasions, he stressed that narrative alone was insufficient; real action needed to be taken immediately.
