Muhammadiyah’s Emergency Medical Team Becomes First in Indonesia to Receive WHO Verification
JAKARTA – After undergoing an extensive and comprehensive process since 2017, Muhammadiyah’s Emergency Medical Team (EMT) has been offiicially verified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as Indonesia’s first internationally-standardized emergency medical team.
Roy Anthony Cosico from the WHO HQ EMT Secretariat personally delivered the EMT Global Classification Confirmation Letter to EMT Muhammadiyah on Sunday, October 19, at the KH. Sudja’ Mosque Hall, PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping.
A Historic Milestone for Indonesian Humanitarian Efforts
Syafiq A. Mughni, Chairman of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, emphasized that this certification marks a new chapter in Muhammadiyah’s international humanitarian work. This historic moment serves as concrete evidence of implementing Muhammadiyah’s priority programs for the 2022-2027 period, specifically expanding and institutionalizing Muhammadiyah’s internationalization in its mission of dakwah (Islamic outreach) and tajdid (renewal) that embodies rahmatan lil-‘alamin (mercy to all creation).
“The certification we obtained today is extremely important because it encompasses three main aspects: commitment, mindset and motivation, as well as technical skills,” he explained.
These three elements are interconnected and form the primary foundation for EMT Muhammadiyah’s continued development. “Through commitment and technical capabilities supported by field experience, we will continue delivering our best for humanity and national welfare,” Syafiq clarified.
Rigorous Verification Process
Previously, EMT Muhammadiyah underwent WHO’s pre-verification stage on July 9-10, 2025, in Yogyakarta, with technical assistance from Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and International Search and Rescue (ISAR).
Based on evaluation results, WHO determined that EMT Muhammadiyah qualified to proceed with the final verification process to obtain official status as an international emergency medical team. The final verification took place on Sunday, October 19, at the KH. Sudja’ Mosque Hall, PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping.
International Recognition and Future Impact
Dr. Agus Taufiqurrahman, Chairman of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, expressed hopes that Muhammadiyah’s role moving forward can be increasingly strengthened and continue as an integral part of its international contributions.
“Muhammadiyah officially has a verified medical team for the first time in Indonesia, number 16 internationally,” he stated.
This certification will further strengthen Muhammadiyah’s position as an inseparable part of its international roles. With this achievement, he continued, Muhammadiyah affirms its commitment as a professional global humanitarian organization, based on Islamic values, and ready to contribute to disaster response and health crisis missions, both nationally and internationally.
Significance for Indonesia
The verification of EMT Muhammadiyah represents a significant achievement not only for the organization but for Indonesia as a whole. As the country’s first WHO-verified emergency medical team, it demonstrates Indonesia’s capacity to meet international standards in emergency medical response.
This recognition positions Muhammadiyah to participate more effectively in global humanitarian efforts, particularly in disaster response and health emergencies. The team can now be deployed internationally under WHO coordination during crises, bringing Indonesian expertise and Islamic humanitarian values to communities worldwide.
The achievement also reflects years of dedicated preparation, training, and capacity building, showcasing Muhammadiyah’s commitment to professional humanitarian service that transcends national boundaries while remaining rooted in Islamic principles of compassion and service to humanity.
