Cambodia Moves to Strengthen Halal Certification Framework
| By Khmertimeskh
Cambodia is taking concrete steps to reinforce its halal certification system as part of a broader effort to strengthen regulatory standards and enhance confidence in locally produced halal goods. Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul, who also serves as Chairwoman of the Cambodian Halal Steering Committee (CHSC), led an extraordinary CHSC meeting at the Ministry of Commerce on Monday to advance these initiatives.
Key Policy Documents Reviewed by Halal Steering Committee
The meeting brought together Othsman Hassan, Senior Minister in Charge of Special Mission for Islamic Affairs, alongside CHSC members representing various ministries and institutions. Discussions focused on two major policy documents central to the development of Cambodia’s halal ecosystem.
The first document is a draft declaration outlining procedures for applying for certification under Cambodian halal technical standards. The second is a draft concept paper proposing a nationwide campaign to promote and facilitate halal certification registration among businesses.
Strengthening Competitiveness in Domestic and Global Halal Markets
These proposed measures aim to improve regulatory transparency, ensure compliance with recognized halal standards, and enhance the competitiveness of Cambodian halal products both at home and abroad. Officials noted that stronger certification mechanisms are increasingly vital for market access, particularly as halal requirements become more stringent in international trade.
Aligning with Cambodia’s Halal Economy Strategy
The initiative forms part of Cambodia’s wider strategy to capitalize on the rapidly expanding global halal economy, especially in sectors such as food processing, agro-industry, and consumer goods. By reinforcing its certification framework, Cambodia hopes to attract greater investor confidence and position itself more effectively within regional and global halal supply chains.
Ceremony Honours National Sacrifice
Before the meeting began, participants observed a solemn tribute to soldiers who lost their lives defending Cambodia’s territorial integrity, reflecting the government’s recognition of national sacrifice alongside its economic and institutional priorities.
