Muslim Mental Health Organization Celebrates Decade of Faith-Based Healing

The Lantern Initiative, a mental health organization based in the United Kingdom that serves the Muslim community, has reached its 10th anniversary milestone. Founded in 2015 in Milton Keynes, the initiative began as coffee mornings aimed at reducing loneliness among young Muslim mothers.

Significant Growth and Expansion Over the Years

What started as informal gatherings has transformed into a substantial operation. Over the past decade, it has expanded significantly, now operating with numerous volunteers and hosting international retreats, conferences, and youth programs.

Historical Islamic Psychology Provides Foundation

The organization’s approach is grounded in centuries-old Islamic psychological traditions. The organisation draws inspiration from Islamic psychology pioneers such as Abu Zayd al-Balkhi, who developed early cognitive behavioural techniques, and Avicenna (Ibn Sina), known as the “Prince of Physicians.”

These historical contributions serve as the basis for their faith-integrated mental health services.

International Programs and Signature Events

The organization has expanded its reach globally through various programs. Managing director and co-founder Safura Houghton explained that their retreats, held in the UK, Spain, and Uzbekistan, provide participants with deep insights into mental health support through faith-based frameworks. Their primary offering, Healing Minds, focuses specifically on women’s mental health within Islamic contexts and has proven highly popular across multiple cities.

Addressing Healthcare Gaps and Building Partnerships

The initiative works to fill important gaps in mental health services for Muslims. The organisation also aims to increase access to Muslim therapists, addressing gaps in mainstream NHS and private counselling services. They are also working with religious leaders to integrate mental health support into Islamic institutions, emphasizing a comprehensive approach that combines traditional faith elements with contemporary therapeutic methods.
