Military Mess Hall Menu Makeover: CFB Gagetown Goes All-Halal for Poultry

Exclusive Discovery Reveals Single-Source Chicken Policy at New Brunswick Base

Canadian Forces Base Gagetown has implemented a distinctive culinary policy: every piece of chicken served in its mess hall now carries Halal certification, according to National Defence officials.

True North’s investigation, sparked by an insider within the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), uncovered this exclusive arrangement at the New Brunswick military installation. Nick Drescher Brown, speaking for National Defence, confirmed the base’s 100% Halal chicken policy while emphasizing the military’s commitment to accommodating diverse dietary requirements with nutritious options.

The Arabic term “Halal” translates to “permissible” within Islamic dietary law. The certification process requires specific slaughter methods: the animal’s throat is cut while its heart continues beating, the head remains attached during blood drainage, with a Muslim reciting “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest) throughout the procedure.

Base-by-Base Discretion, Not Blanket Mandate

Drescher Brown clarified that no force-wide regulation requires universal Halal chicken across all Canadian military dining facilities. Instead, individual units maintain autonomy in determining their Halal-certified procurement percentages.

CAF Strategic Food Services maintains ongoing dialogue with cultural representatives, including Chaplain Branch religious leadership, to identify necessary accommodations for service members’ cultural practices, including Halal dietary observances.

The Defence Administrative Orders directives on Religious or Spiritual Accommodation obligate the CAF to evaluate accommodation requests tied to sincerely held religious beliefs. This requirement stems from both the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms alongside the Canadian Human Rights Act, aiming to remove barriers affecting military personnel.

Procurement Process Allows Supplier Flexibility

CAF standing supply contracts include optional Halal-certified chicken line items listed alongside conventional poultry products, enabling suppliers to submit competitive bids through their preferred channels. Certification management falls to distributors Sysco and Gordon Food Services rather than a singular CAF-designated authority.

Deployed personnel can access Halal field rations as alternatives to standard Individual Meal Packs, though these represent a distinct procurement stream.

Drescher Brown acknowledged he couldn’t immediately provide taxpayer expenditure figures for Halal product procurement but committed to sharing relevant data once compiled.
